Job Description / Duties
- Responsible for carrying out all daily operations of the Embryology Laboratory.
- Fully proficient in all technical aspects of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and capable of efficiently managing laboratory workflow.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail, with a clear understanding of the sensitive and confidential nature of infertility and ART treatments.
- Prepares media using sterile techniques for each case and accurately documents all lot numbers used.
- Identifies and isolates oocytes during egg retrieval procedures.
- Processes semen for IVF in accordance with established lab protocols.
- Independently and competently performs intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- Performs assisted hatching on Day 3 embryos with precision, avoiding any trauma to the embryo.
- Accurately assesses fertilization by observing pronuclei and polar bodies.
- Proficient in grading embryos from Day 3 through Day 6 following IVF lab guidelines.
- Independently and competently performs embryo biopsies.
- Demonstrates comprehensive proficiency of all embryology and andrology procedures required for IVF and can work independently.
- Proficient in the vitrification (freezing) and warming of oocytes.
- Able to assist physician with embryo transfers by successfully loading embryos into a transfer catheter.
- Maintains accurate and detailed laboratory records and patient documentation.
- Adheres strictly to all laboratory protocols, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
- Functions effectively as part of a team and willingly takes on additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Possesses strong problem-solving skills and a high level of attention to detail.
- Demonstrates the ability to work quickly and precisely using meticulous laboratory techniques.
- Practices excellent general laboratory and sterile techniques.
- Keeps the workspace clean and organized by performing regular housekeeping tasks.
- Performs ICSI using extremely poor-quality sperm, including sperm obtained via surgical extraction.
- Identifies sperm retrieved through testicular or epididymal procedures (e.g., PESA, MESA and TESE).
- Provides weekend and holiday coverage independently as needed.
- Supervise and train junior embryologists, laboratory staff, and technicians.
- Ensure adherence to lab protocols, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS), College of Physicians and Surgeons, Accreditation Canada, Health Canada).
- Maintain lab equipment, ensuring calibration, cleanliness, and functionality.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any technical or operational issues in the lab.
- Maintain strict quality control and documentation of all laboratory processes.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards, including the maintenance of patient confidentiality and data protection.
- Monitor laboratory quality metrics, such as embryo development, pregnancy success rates, and laboratory procedures.
- Assist with consultations for patients regarding fertility treatments, procedures, and expectations.
- Communicate effectively with patients regarding the status of embryos and IVF cycle progress.
- Provide guidance and counseling on fertility treatments and outcomes.
- Engage in ongoing professional development through research, workshops, and conferences.
- Implement new technologies, tools, and techniques to improve lab efficiency and patient outcomes.
- Work closely with fertility specialists, gynecologists, and other medical professionals to develop individualized treatment plans for patients.
- Participate in case discussions to improve clinical decision-making and patient care.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all procedures and patient interactions, including embryo development stages, fertilization outcomes, and genetic testing.
- Prepare and review reports, both for internal use and for patients.
- Reports to the Laboratory Director and Medical Director
Qualifications / Required Skills
A. Skill Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a clinical embryologist in Canada
- Experience in third party donor and surrogacy and comprehensive knowledge of Assisted Human Reproductive Act
- Experience in receiving and shipping embryos as per Health Canada guidelines
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in laboratory management and troubleshooting is preferred
- Detail-oriented – able to work quickly and accurately
- Time-management skills with ability to multi-task and prioritize
- Strong written and communication skills with both patients and colleagues
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Familiar with using electronic medical records
- Experience, willingness and comfort with providing care to LGBT2SQ individuals and couples
- Ability to work long or irregular hours, including weekends, depending on clinic demands.
B. Knowledge Requirements:
- BSc. or higher in Biology or Laboratory Science is required
- Master’s degree in Biology, Reproductive Biology, or a related field is preferred
C. Physical Requirements:
- Fine motor skills which enable performance of advanced laboratory procedures
- Ability to sit/stand/bend over for long periods of time
D. License/Certification Requirements:
- Certification in embryology from a recognized governing body (e.g., Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society or equivalent) is required.
E. Other Abilities Requirements:

- Canadian Citizenship, Residency, or valid work permit required

Pay: $75,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
