Job Description: Medical Device Reprocessor in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Position Title: Medical Device Reprocessor
Department: Sterile Processing
Job Summary:
The Medical Device Reprocessor (MDR) is responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of reusable medical instruments and devices used in clinic’s procedures. This role ensures the integrity, safety, and quality of all instruments to meet hospital standards and regulatory requirements. The MDR will collaborate closely with clinical teams, including MDs, obstetricians, gynecologists, and surgical staff, to ensure the efficient reprocessing of medical devices. In addition, the MDR is responsible to liaise with vendors such as Stericycle for bio waste and sharp disposal and with Medical Suppliers to order and stock supplies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Medical Device Reprocessing:
o Perform decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of reusable OB/GYN instruments and devices in accordance with hospital policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
o Ensure instruments are meticulously checked for functionality, cleanliness, and safety before being returned to service.
o Accurately follow procedures for high-level disinfection, sterilization methods (steam, hydrogen peroxide), and monitoring of sterilization cycles.
2. Compliance and Safety Standards:
o Adhere to all applicable regulatory standards
o Stay updated with the latest protocols, reprocessing standards, and certifications to ensure compliance with the Medical Device Reporting (MDR) requirements and all applicable local regulations.
o Participate in regular training programs and certification updates related to medical device reprocessing.
3. Documentation and Record Keeping:
o Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of sterilization and reprocessing procedures, including device identification, processing methods, and sterilization cycle parameters.
o Ensure proper tracking and management of all OB/GYN devices, with regular checks for expiration dates, manufacturer instructions, and device integrity.
o Record and report any incidents or deviations from standard procedures, including equipment malfunction or failure.
4. Collaboration and Communication:
o Collaborate with clinical staff, including surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare providers, to ensure timely and safe instrument availability for procedures.
o Communicate effectively regarding the status of reprocessed devices, providing updates when necessary, and addressing any concerns regarding instrument readiness.
o Assist in OR as the scrub tech
5. Quality Control and Continuous Improvement:
o Conduct routine inspections of reprocessing equipment to ensure proper functioning, cleanliness, and calibration.
o Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for improving reprocessing workflows and reducing turnaround times.
o Ensure that reprocessing equipment, such as autoclaves and washers, are regularly serviced and maintained in optimal working condition.
6. Training and Mentorship:
o Assist in training new staff members in medical device reprocessing protocols and best practices.
o Provide guidance and leadership in troubleshooting reprocessing challenges, offering mentorship to junior staff and fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
Required Qualifications:
o Completion of an accredited medical device reprocessing program or related healthcare training.
o College-level completion of the Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) course with an emphasis on advanced sterilization techniques, infection control, and regulatory compliance.
o A minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital or clinical setting in medical device reprocessing, with specialized experience in OB/GYN procedures and instruments.
o Advanced experience in reprocessing complex surgical instruments used in obstetrics and gynecology.
o Proven track record of handling OB/GYN surgical instruments, including forceps, speculums, ultrasound probes, and laparoscopic devices.
Certifications:
o Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or a similar recognized certification.
o Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is preferred.
o Additional certification or training in Advanced Medical Device Reprocessing or related fields is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of medical device reprocessing for OB/GYN-specific instruments and equipment.
- Strong familiarity with OB/GYN surgical procedures and instrumentation used in operating rooms, gynecological surgeries, and outpatient settings.
- In-depth understanding of the Medical Device Reporting (MDR) process and the role of reprocessors in ensuring patient safety.
- Proficiency in handling and maintaining complex devices used in OB/GYN, including fetal monitors, surgical tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Demonstrated experience in a fast-paced clinic/hospital environment with the ability to manage priorities efficiently and under pressure.
