As a casual Registered Nurse, Maternal Fetal Medicine (RN, MFM), you’ll play a vital role in providing specialized care to expectant mothers with high-risk pregnancies. From coordinating diagnostic assessments to offering patient education and support, your contributions will help ensure the best possible outcomes for both mothers and babies. Whether you're collaborating with healthcare teams, interpreting diagnostic results, or guiding families through complex medical journeys, your skills and compassion will make a lasting difference!
What You’ll Be Doing
- Patient-Centered Care: Provide exceptional patient and family-centred health care throughout the expectant mother’s experience, from pre-scan to post-scan.
- Collaborate with Healthcare Teams: Work closely with radiologists and healthcare professionals to review images and ensure diagnostic accuracy.
- Pre-Scan: Gather pertinent patient history, assess for additional imaging needs, and prepare patients for exams.
- Post-Scan: Coordinate follow-up care, including liaising with physicians and hospitals, and ensuring all necessary appointments are scheduled.
- Day-of Appointment Management: Monitor patients in-clinic, verify vital signs, provide education, and offer emotional support during complex, stressful situations.
- Manage Prenatal Testing: Handle NIPT kits, complete samples, and coordinate with patients as required.
- Program Development: Engage in planning, quality improvement, and professional development activities to help build and enhance the Maternal Fetal Medicine program.
- Maintain Records & Compliance: Keep patient documentation up to date while ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.
- Expand Expertise: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay informed on the latest imaging techniques, technologies, and best practices.
- Enhance Workflow: Contribute to process improvements that optimize efficiency and patient outcomes.
What We’re Looking For
- Education: Post-secondary nursing credentials (A Bachelor’s degree or higher).
- Professional Membership: Current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).
- Advanced Certifications: CPR-C or BLS, with mandatory Fetal Health Surveillance Certification.
- Patient-Centered Approach: A commitment to compassionate care and ensuring patient comfort.
- Labour & Delivery Expertise: Minimum of five years of experience in labour and delivery nursing is preferred.
- High-Risk Obstetrics Knowledge: Experience or certification in tertiary, high-risk labour and antepartum care is an asset.
- Diagnostic Proficiency: Knowledge of obstetrical ultrasound and prenatal screening is an asset but not required.
- Patient & Family Support: Strong counseling skills, providing support in complex and emotional clinical situations.
- Case Management: Proven experience managing patient flow and coordinating complex cases.
- Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Continuous Learning: A commitment to ongoing professional development to enhance skills and expertise.
- Health & Safety: Strong adherence to health and safety protocols while performing procedures and operating medical imaging equipment.
- Collaboration & Adaptable: Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently and alongside colleagues to deliver exceptional patient care.

Additional Information
- Typical Schedule: 1–2 days per week, with occasional biweekly shifts based on operational needs. While scheduling aligns with clinic needs, there are no guaranteed minimum or maximum weekly hours.
- MFM Clinic Operations: MFM clinic days are biweekly Mondays and every Wednesday, with patient preparation occurring on non-clinic days.
