Overall Purpose of the Job
- To provide antenatal and postnatal care to asylum seekers and refugees on the Republic of Nauru at an obstetric and gynecological specialist level.
- To assist other Gynecologists and Obstetricians employed by the Republic of Nauru’s Hospital when requested by the Area Medical Director Offshore
- To assist with capacity-build activities with the Republic of Nauru Hospital’s clinical staff in collaboration with existing obstetric service staff
- To provide direct clinical support to the service as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Management:
- Assess, diagnose and treat clients in Immigration facilities within the fields of obstetrics and gynecology especially with regard to antenatal and post-natal care.
- Assess, diagnose and treat asylum-seekers and refugees on Nauru within the fields of Obstetrics and/or Gynecology.
- Provide immediate assessment, diagnosis and treatment in emergency obstetric situations of all pregnant asylum-seekers within the OPC, or refugees housed within the Nauruan resettlement program.
- Provide after-hours coverage for emergency obstetric situations to ensure that medical response is available 24 hours a day seven days a week.
- Provide advice and education to nurses and allied health professionals as necessary or as requested.
- Participate in scheduled meetings and training at the OPC as required or requested.
- Design and lead a simple training and development program in obstetrics to medical and midwifery staff at the Republic of Nauru hospital
- Liaise with all parties involved in the medical management of asylum-seekers in Immigration Detention, and refugees within resettlement. This includes health center staff, security and external health care providers.
- Use the IHMS Apollo Electronic Medical Record System.
- Ensure accuracy and maintenance of all medical records and compliance with professional standards.
- Comply with privacy legislation and IHMS Policy and Procedures Manual including the confidentiality agreement.
- Refer to, and discuss with, external specialists for advice or treatment as necessary or requested.
- Contribute to the development of standards, policies and procedures for the management of the health and wellbeing of obstetrics and gynecology patients and rectification of identified problems.
- Provide medical advice and drug orders to health center nurses.
- Ensure that all OPC medical protocols, treatment regimens, emergency evacuation and other procedures are documented and observed.
- Assist the Senior Medical Officer and Area Medical Director to ensure adequate Clinical Governance is in place
- Help organize referral of patients to third party providers including hospitals and work with the International SOS Assistance Centre
- Provide outpatient consultations, pre-operative assessments, consultations and other related obstetrics/gynecology services
- Provide services to other areas as requested.
- Work with the nursing, midwifery and anesthetic team to implement or establish protocols of relevance to the obstetric environment
- Participate in administrative matters, for example, preparation of medical reports, rosters, technical advice on medical equipment, the preparation of tender specifications and in committees and staff meetings
- Undertake such additional duties as directed by the Senior Medical Advisor / Area Medical Director/Senior Medical Officer
- Participate in the Performance Appraisal and Development process.

Required Work Experience
- Significant full time experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Experience with computerized medical records and medical practice systems is highly desirable
- Previous experience working in remote locations or in culturally different locales is desirable
- Previous experience in Detention, Refugee and/or military settings is desirable
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Bachelor of Medicine
- Fellowship of the RANZCOG or equivalent is highly desirable (e.g. FRCOG, FACOG, FPOGS or equivalent diplomate)
Required Languages
Travel / Rotation Requirements
- To Australian cities and remote locations including Offshore Processing centers on Manus Island and the Republic of Nauru.
- Driver’s License prerequisite: Manus – Not required. Nauru – Required
Project Duration:
ASAP - for 7 months
Rotation: 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off
