Program Manager, Education Hub
Division of Endocrinology
The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario Canada
The Ontario Paediatric Bariatric Network (OPBN) with oversight by the Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health (PCMCH) is comprised of 12 Ministry of Health (MOH) funded paediatric weight management clinics across Ontario. The SickKids Healthy Living Clinic (HLC) is one of these sites, providing specialized paediatric weight management services to children and adolescents with obesity, many of whom have complex medical and psychosocial health needs. The OPBN was convened to promote consistency in standards of practice, resources, and outcome measures. With leadership and coordination support from PCMCH, the OPBN identifies priorities and recommends strategies to advance a coordinated system of services, address service gaps, and improve quality of care across community and hospital settings, and across urban, rural, and remote regions.
A cornerstone of paediatric obesity treatment is addressing barriers and enablers of healthy behaviour change through psychoeducational sessions - a process designed to equip patients and families for long-term sustainable changes that will improve current and future health. An OPBN gap analysis conducted in the 2022/23 fiscal year highlighted the urgent need for the development, coordination, and evaluation of shared allied health educational programming for families across the OPBN, particularly in specialty areas where resources are lacking.
The OPBN Education Hub will consolidate expertise, develop program materials, and coordinate diverse educational programs for patients and families. These will include lectures, interactive sessions, specialty treatment or therapy groups, and flexible-accessibility resources such as podcasts or videos. Content will focus on highly specialized mental health, nutrition, and physical activity materials. Evaluation metrics such as demographics, patient knowledge, provider/patient satisfaction, and patient/family change in self-efficacy will gauge program effectiveness. The Education Hub aims to streamline and increase educational resource innovation, dramatically increase patient/family access to treatment, and reduce system redundancy, overall costs, and provider burden. The vision is to create a comprehensive and flexible hub that empowers stakeholders and significantly enhances timely and effective patient care across the network.
