MANAGER
MIDWIFERY (NON-NYSNA)
FULL TIME / MONDAY – FRIDAY
Under the direction of the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Manager of the Midwifery Service functions as the manager of the Midwife service and as such is responsible for the overall development of the Midwifery Service and for coordinating all the ongoing activities of the service.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Oversight: Provide visionary leadership and direction for the midwifery department, ensuring alignment with the hospital's mission and values.
1.*Coordinates all Midwifery activities within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
2. Protocol Development: In conjunction with Director of Obstetrics, oversees the creation,
implementation, and continuous review of midwifery protocols for both staff and voluntary midwives,
ensuring adherence to the latest clinical guidelines and best practices complying with State regulations, American College of Nurse Midwives standards, the By-Laws of Maimonides Medical Center and insurance providers.
Staff Supervision and Development: Manage and support staff midwives, including hiring and collaborating with Nurse Recruitment for onboarding, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes professional growth, excellence in care, and adherence to evidence-based practices.
3.*Selects, hires, onboards, and supervises midwives; initiates disciplinary action, including terminations; carries out annual performance appraisal of employees recommending promotions, raises, etc.
4.*Orients and trains new midwives and ensures that they receive mandatory training in CPR, Neonatal
Resuscitation, Third Trimester Sonogram, Labor Pro Ultrasound, etc.
5.*Ensures adequate midwife coverage and medical assistant coverage of all obstetrical clinical areas by
developing work schedules and coordinating the vacation and holiday schedules; approves overtime as
necessary and arranges coverage for absent staff; maintains employee attendance records (including
vacation time, sick days) and processes timecards for staff.
6.*Responsible for the Quality Assurance activities of the Midwifery Service. Participates in the Quality Assurance activities of the Department and is a member of the Departmental Quality assurance Committee. Lead quality improvement initiatives within the midwifery department, monitoring outcomes, and implementing strategies to enhance the quality of care provided.
7.Collaboration with Hospitalists: Work closely with hospitalists to ensure seamless integration of midwifery services within the broader healthcare team, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
8.Education and Training: Develop and implement ongoing education and training programs for midwifery staff, including orientation for new staff and continuing education opportunities. Coordinates clinical education and training for family practice residents, medical students and student nurse midwives.
9.Business Development: Spearhead the development of new programs related to midwifery, identifying growth opportunities, securing funding, and ensuring the successful launch and sustainability of these programs.
10.Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all midwifery practices are compliant with state and federal regulations, as well as hospital policies, maintaining high standards of care and patient safety.
11.Patient Advocacy: Champion patient-centered care, advocating for the needs and preferences of mothers and families within the healthcare system.
12.Collaboration with Other Departments: Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the midwifery department and other hospital departments to ensure cohesive, multidisciplinary care.
13.Data Management and Reporting: Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of midwifery-related data, using insights to drive decision-making and continuous improvement.
14.Community Outreach: Represent the midwifery department in community outreach efforts, promoting midwifery services and educating the public on maternal and child health.
15.Budget Management: Manage the midwifery department's budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to meet departmental goals and sustain high-quality care.
16.Provides for continuing medical education of midwifery staff.
17.Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program,
safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
18.Provides and manages the health care of women and newborns as specifically outlined in the Midwifery Service Management guidelines of Maimonides Medical Center.
19.Participates in all obstetrical clinics of the Outpatient Department (prenatal, postpartum, and family planning):
a. Takes history and physical and appropriate laboratory data on patients seen in the obstetrical clinics.
b. Assesses the status of the patient, develops and implements a plan of care with the patient during the prenatal, intraportal and postpartum period.
c. Responsible for patient education for health maintenance, ongoing assessment and follow-up care of the postpartum family, contraceptive guidance, and evaluation and treatment of minor gynecological conditions.

Seeks medical consultation for patients with deviations from standard guidelines for midwifery management.
e. Performs ongoing review of care including evaluation and documentation in the medical record.
20.Manages deliveries according to Maimonides Medical Center approved guidelines which allow midwives to perform all normal spontaneous uncomplicated vaginal deliveries and, under medical supervision, to perform third- and fourth-degree repairs. Management of labor patients includes admission and discharge, physical and emotional support, delivery of the newborn, immediate and follow-up care of the newborn infant, postpartum care of the inpatient.
21.Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

OTHER JOB DUTIES
Participates in developing and compiling statistics and data as they relate to the midwifery service and/or the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Participates, as necessary, in the development of the budget of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as it pertains to the Midwifery Service.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in arts or science with specialization in Midwifery required.
- Current NYS licensure as a Certified Midwife (CM), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) or Licensed Midwife (LM) required.
- Certification in Midwifery by the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Current DEA number for prescriptive privileges required.

Maintain clinical competence/skills through CME and attendance at in-service conferences
(60 CEUs per 2 years as required for recredentialing).

At least 7 years of midwifery experience, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience required.

Good oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal skills.

Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
