SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Director of Ob/Gyn is responsible for the clinical functions of the Ob/Gyn medical staff. Serving as the department’s medical manager, the Ob/Gyn Director works collaboratively with providers and staff on matters related to medical practice and standards of care. Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, the Ob/Gyn Director ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-centered care to the population we serve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Delivers patient care and maintains a clinical practice schedule as determined. Directs the department-specific clinical practice and ensures alignment with organizational standards.
- Manages physicians, mid-level providers, case managers, and patient counselors involved in medical practice and patient care activities.
- Provides continuity of patient care by coordinating services among physicians and mid-level providers.
- Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer to monitor key fiscal parameters, including medical staff utilization, productivity, and managed care panel sizes.
- Participates in implementing changes necessary to meet the organization’s financial goals and directives.
- Shares responsibility with the Medical Director for budget development, setting patient utilization targets, and achieving both budgetary and utilization goals.
- Establishes and implements clinical standards of care and policies/procedures—developed in partnership with the Medical Director and the Director of Quality Assurance and Improvement—that are consistent with organizational goals and sound medical practices. Ensures provider adherence to these standards.
- Collaborates with the Medical Director to develop and implement disease management protocols to ensure the consistent and effective delivery of high-quality health care.
- Analyzes and evaluates the performance of medical staff within the department, particularly as it relates to clinical practice and patient care. Assists the Medical Director in setting performance goals and development plans for providers.
- Works jointly with the Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer to organize and develop new medical services and clinical programs within the department, including establishing multidisciplinary team approaches for diagnosis and treatment.
- Participates in marketing initiatives to expand the patient base and promote department services.
- Works with the Joint Commission Committee to implement and uphold accreditation standards for health services. Participates in related projects and initiatives to ensure compliance.
- Establishes and maintains a robust provider onboarding and evaluation program, ensuring new physicians and mid-level providers receive appropriate orientation and ongoing appraisal.
- Ensures implementation of Quality Assurance Programs in the clinical area and submits quarterly reports to the Medical Director as required.
- Collaborates with the Medical Director and Administration to resolve major concerns involving physician-to-physician, physician-to-patient, and physician-to-staff relationships. Promotes positive and professional interactions across all levels.
- Represents Whittier Street Health Center in external partnerships and affiliations relating to medical practice and patient care.
- Maintains current knowledge of ethical, moral, and legal issues relevant to the practice of medicine.
- Assists the administrative team in developing and supporting risk management programs.
- Monitors provider scheduling practices and recommends necessary changes to improve patient access. Works with department leadership to ensure compliance with scheduling policies.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and maintains required professional licenses and affiliations.
- Participates in academic teaching programs and medical research, as appropriate.
- Identifies opportunities for grants and program development to support departmental and patient care goals.
- Actively participates in medical staff committees and cross-functional teams, as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) with completed residency training in an appropriate specialty.
- Board certification or board eligibility with the expectation of achieving certification within a defined timeframe.
- Graduate-level coursework in Health or Business Administration strongly preferred.
- Current and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a practicing clinician, with prior experience in medical administration.
- Strong knowledge of medical practice standards and clinical care principles to effectively assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
- Familiarity with organizational policies, procedures, and healthcare systems.
- In-depth understanding of federal and state healthcare regulations and compliance requirements (e.g., Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine).
- Knowledge of the local community and the ability to engage community leaders in support of organizational goals and initiatives.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to achieve shared objectives.
- Expertise in developing and applying disease management protocols in clinical settings.
- Knowledge of grant administration and experience supporting programmatic or departmental funding initiatives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and clinical software programs (e.g., electronic medical records).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make informed, strategic decisions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position may require prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting of supplies or equipment up to 25 pounds.
