About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced senior bioinformatician, with a biological background and interest in translational research, to join an internationally leading interdisciplinary team in the Department of Women & Children’s Health and the Clinical Diagnostics Development Unit (CDDU), Department of Infectious Diseases at King’s College London. The post will be hosted in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine Hub for Applied Bioinformatics.
This post is jointly funded by the Borne Foundation (50%) and King’s Health Partner’s Centre for Translational Medicine (CTM) (50%). This post will support analysis of multiomics data (e.g. single cell and single nuclear RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics etc.) generated by the Borne Uterine Mapping Project (BUMP, focussed on revealing novel pathways and therapeutic targets related to preterm birth) as well as the activities of the CDDU directed as developing new diagnostics (Dr Martinez-Nunez) using harmonised protocols for clinical sample processing and multiomics approaches (including transcriptomics, genomics, metagenomics etc.).
We have joined our teams to provide bespoke support and analysis of single cell, single nuclear, and spatial data acquired by the BUMP study central team and collaborators and researchers at KCL via the CDDU. The main purpose of the role encompasses performing data integration and statistical analysis while offering comprehensive data-driven decision support by overseeing the cleaning, integration, analysis, and storage of diverse datasets.
The bioinformatician will work under the supervision of Prof. Rachel Tribe and Dr Martinez-Nunez. The postholder will also benefit from the vibrant and growing bioinformatics community led by Dr. Alessandra Vigilante (lead of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine Hub for Applied Bioinformatics).
We are looking for an ambitious candidate with established expertise in bioinformatics, specifically dealing with large data sets and data integration. Knowledge of python and R is essential.
This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 June 2027.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD qualified in relevant subject area
- Extensive experience working in bioinformatics with large datasets
- Previous experience in statistical analysis of data, leading to peer reviewed papers and/or presentation of findings at conferences
- Evidence of excellent scientific analysis skills
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of computer programming such as Unix, Python and R
- Previous experience with multi-omics and their integration
- Deep technical understanding of bioinformatics analysis approaches and data
- Ability to mentor and develop bioinformaticians at all stages of the analysis project workflow
Desirable criteria
- Excellent computational skills applied to HPC, big data, software development and web technologies
- Experience in teaching bioinformatics
- Previous experience with AI and/or machine learning approaches
- Interest in reproductive health and/or development of clinical tools and algorithms
