The job provides health services for students who have medical conditions or major functional limitations. The incumbent attends to the medical and personal care needs of students with severe disabilities, conditions and disorders. The needs could include, but are not limited to, requirements for g-tube feeding, ostomy care, lifting, tracheostomy care, seizure monitoring, feeding, monitoring the risk of choking, and mobility exercises. Students are in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
Working under the supervision of a teacher or therapeutic specialist, the job also provides guidance and support to Educational Assistants working with students with physical and emotional support needs to be successful in the classroom. The incumbent requires specialized knowledge in the area of health and personal care to handle key facets of the job. Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta is essential. The job involves working independently and participating on a multi-disciplinary team.
Job Responsibilities:

Perform healthcare-related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs, administering medication, G-tube and ostomy care;

Provide guidance, instruction, and support to Educational Assistants on a day-to-day basis, including training, coaching, and demonstrating basic medical and physical care;

Participate in case reviews and consult with the educational team, multi-disciplinary team, and therapeutic specialists to evaluate the student’s needs and plan for continuing services;

Prepare and maintain records of students’ progress and services performed, report changes to the educational team.

Identify factors that have an effect on various types of health conditions (e.g., glucose control for the diabetic) and develop solutions;

Provide information to supervisor, co-workers, Educational Assistants, and the Educational Teams by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person;

Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems;

Provide input into the Individual Program Plan process with a focus on health and wellness;

Collect information and maintain medical logs and/or documentation;

Assist Educational Assistant with difficult situations and provide cover-off and support during absences;

When not handling medical assignments, the job assists with classroom support;

Maintain technical knowledge and Licensed Practical Nurses credentials through a range of professional development activities;
Qualifications:

Graduation from an approved nursing education program, plus three years of related experience;

Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta is mandatory;

Knowledge of ambulation aids, normal anatomy and physiology, deviations in anatomy and physiology due to developmental delays, illnesses, and medical conditions;

Knowledge of how deviations in normal development affect behavioural, emotional, and mental health (i.e. Down syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy);

Knowledge of instructional, training, and coaching techniques;

Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations;

Understanding of division and department operations and business, school systems and structures, community services for children and families;

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to understand non-verbal communication and behaviours;

Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical clients;

Strong needs assessment and analytical skills;

Good leadership skills and the ability to train, coach, and mentor Educational Assistants;
