Job Description:
Reporting to the Director, Professional Practice and working closely alongside the Manager, Professional Practice, the Clinical Educator – Extern Program & Nursing Workforce Development will provide high touch rounding and education support to clinical areas across THP’s sites, primarily on evenings and weekends. The role will support clinical team learning needs, with a focus on novice staff, clinical externs and other priority nursing workforce groups (e.g., internationally-educated nurses). This role will also assist with other corporate initiatives to support nurses at THP, including the Clinical Extern program. This will be achieved through innovative approaches to developing and delivering clinical orientation and education, engaging in active mentorship and coaching and fostering partnerships with clinical programs. The Clinical Extern program employs learners from different health disciplines (e.g., nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy, paramedicine) as unregulated care providers who support clinical teams across multiple sites, including Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital, Queensway Health Centre and the Reactivation Care Centre.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain strong unit presence on evenings and weekends to support Externs and other priority nursing workforce groups’ transition to clinical environments, assessing and addressing ongoing learning needs and supporting the team where needed
- Facilitate integration of Externs and other priority nursing workforce groups at the organizational and unit level, serving as a liaison between unit/program leadership and Professional Practice
- Collaborate with unit leadership and staff to ensure good role clarity and team processes with Externs and other priority nursing workforce groups to provide high quality, patient and family-centered care
- Actively mentor Externs and other priority nursing workforce groups, coaching through new experiences and supporting their professional career growth
- Promote Extern and other priority nursing workforce groups’ wellness and team well-being through approaches such as the development of peer-to-peer networks
- Create, adapt and deliver orientation, education and preceptor resources, drawing on innovations and best practices in clinical learning
- Support other corporate initiatives for the nursing workforce at THP related to:
- Onboarding, orientation and continuing education
- Preceptorship, supervision and peer support
Professional development, talent management and retention
Qualifications:
- Registration (in good standing) with the College of Nurses of Ontario or other professional regulatory body
- Minimum 3 years clinical experience acute care in medicine, emergency, critical care, renal surgery, complex continuing care, rehab, mental health and/or maternal newborn and child, preferred
- Previous experience as a clinical educator, instructor or placement supervisor an asset
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing or other health professional or related program; Masters preferred
- Understanding of adult learning and change management techniques in both classroom and clinical settings;
- Ability to coach, mentor and provide feedback while fostering a positive work culture
- Strong critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving and conflict resolutions skills
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and quality improvement
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment
- Computer Skills such as Power Point, Excel and Prezi
- Excellent communication, presentation and facilitation skills
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Satisfactory attendance and performance required
