Job Summary
As a Registered Nurse in the Postpartum unit, you will provide exceptional care to new mothers and their newborns, focusing on both physical recovery and emotional well-being. You will support mothers through their transition to parenthood, monitor their physical health, and provide expert care for newborns. Additionally, you will educate families on infant care, promote healthy practices, and contribute to a positive and supportive postpartum experience.
Key Responsibilities
Newborn Care:
- Observe newborns for signs of illness, changes in behavior, or difficulty breathing.
- Provide hands-on care including bathing, dressing, weighing the baby, and feeding at regular intervals.
- Educate parents on infant development, nutrition, sleep patterns, safety concerns, and general parenting topics.
Postpartum Care For Mothers
- Monitor the physical health of mothers during the postpartum period, including weight gain, blood pressure measurement, and breast exams.
- Provide guidance on recovery from childbirth, including managing physical discomfort, wound care, and breastfeeding support.
Mental Health Support
- Offer emotional support to mothers dealing with anxiety, stress, or other mental health challenges related to pregnancy, childbirth, or parenting.
- Provide counseling and reassurance to mothers navigating the challenges of the postpartum period and adjusting to parenthood.
Education & Advocacy
- Educate new mothers on topics related to infant care, nutrition, sleep hygiene, and safety.
- Share information on best practices in postpartum care and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure optimal care.
Research & Best Practices
- Stay informed about the latest research and evidence-based practices in postpartum care.
- Participate in training and professional development to continually enhance your skills and knowledge in obstetrics and postpartum nursing.
Education
Required Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
Licensure
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with a focus on obstetrics, maternal, or newborn care preferred.
Training & Development
- Willingness to pursue continued nursing education and obstetric training to stay current with best practices in postpartum care.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of maternal and newborn care, including physical health monitoring and infant care.
- Excellent communication and educational skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and supportive manner.
- Empathetic and compassionate approach to caring for mothers and newborns during a challenging and emotional transition.
- Ability to provide mental health support and assist new mothers with emotional challenges during the postpartum period.
- Strong critical thinking skills for identifying changes in physical health or behavior in both mothers and newborns.
- Ability to collaborate with the healthcare team to provide comprehensive care.
