Job Overview: The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) plays a crucial role in healthcare settings by designing, implementing, and delivering educational programs for designated nursing staff to support clinical competencies, organizational standards/practices/guidelines in collaboration with the leadership team. The CNE may also participate in the provision of direct and /or indirect patient care for the purpose of teaching.
The CNE functions as a change agent and resource pertaining to professional development and clinical competence and collaborates with the leadership team around quality improvement strategies. This is a permanent, full-time position.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and update training programs to enhance the clinical skills and knowledge of nursing staff.
- Identify gaps in staff competence to ensure compliance with nursing and organizational standards.
- Provide hands-on training and supervision to nursing staff and student learners in clinical settings.
- Determine educational needs of nursing staff and student learners in designated patient care settings or program areas.
- Serve as a resource for current best practices and evidence-based care.
- Assess the performance of nursing staff and student learners, providing constructive feedback, and identifying areas for improvement.
- Act as a liaison between nursing staff and leadership to ensure educational needs are met.
- Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated with the latest in nursing education and clinical practices.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs to ensure they meet staff and program needs.
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of new or revised policies, procedures, and guidelines affecting patient care.
- Implement clinical practice changes to meet legislative (e.g. Regulatory College Standards, Persons in Protective Care Act, Continuing Care Standards), organizational and accreditation requirements.
- Promote and utilize best practice resources based on current clinical guidelines and expert consultation.
- Participate in clinical committees, working groups, and projects.
- Demonstrate leadership through effective communication for education and coaching.
- Maintain documentation of attendance, competency achievements, and program evaluations.
- Contribute to process improvement strategies for quality, safe, patient-centered care.
- In collaboration with the leadership team, use data analysis and patient safety rounds to identify system risks and develop education as part of risk management.
- Monitor nursing practice trends and identify necessary changes to reflect evidence-informed practice standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
- Current active Practice Permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
- Minimum five years of experience as a Registered Nurse
- Minimum two years of leadership experience
- Specialized training is an asset (e.g., wound care, phlebotomy, administering depot injections, knowledge of addiction medicine, familiarity with Community Treatment Orders, etc.)
- Experience working with vulnerable populations with significant mental health and substance use issues
- Solid knowledge foundation of illness and comorbidities amongst homeless population and the ability to formulate accurate nursing assessments
- Strong health assessment, crisis management and counselling skills
- A class 5 driver's license, clean drivers abstract, and a personal vehicle that can be used for work purposes, or an alternative travel solution, are required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is an asset.
Work Environment And Hours
- 1.0 FTE (37.5 hours/week)
- Monday through Friday, between 0830 and 1800 (8-hour shifts); schedule flexibility is available.
- Work environment is split between three of The Alex medical clinics and mobile nursing support.
- Continuous extended periods of sitting, with some standing and walking.
- Occasional physical activity requiring the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20Ibs.).
- Occasional travel between clinics will be required.

Driving On Behalf Of The Alex
This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes or alternate travel arrangements. Candidates must show proof of a class 5 driver's license, a personal vehicle, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract. Candidates must consent to the possibility of an annual driver's abstract review to meet our insurance provider’s requirements. Mileage will be reimbursed in alignment with the CRA guidelines. If required, driving a fleet vehicle at The Alex also requires that staff are at least 21 years of age with a minimum of three (3) years driving experience.
