Overview
The Registered Nurse is an integral part of the Partners in Pregnancy multi-disciplinary team who works cooperatively with all members of the health care team. Duties of this RN will be divided into categories:
- Well baby visits
- Clinical duties involving people in the perinatal period
- Health care team responsibilities and maintenance of the practice environment.
The Registered Nurse (RN) will practice within their full scope of practice as outlined in the Standards of Practice by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Clinical Duties
- Triage incoming patient calls. Assess patient health care needs, discuss test results and respond to questions pertaining to health promotion and disease prevention. Redirect calls to booking when necessary.
- For patient appointments, initiate the EMR record of the patient visit, purpose, history and health care needs.
- Record patient vitals, urinalysis and prepare the patient and room for examination.
- Implement physician orders ensuring that patients undertake requisite diagnostic testing. Book appointments for patients and educate them as for the purpose of and preparation for such tests.
- Administer and record immunizations.
- Administer clinical procedures such as suture removal, skin and wound dressing.
- Perform blood pressure follow-ups, assessing response to medications, educating patients and promoting health through blood pressure management.
- Maintain accurate, concise and confidential EMR documentation pertaining to patient history and encounter data
- Educate and monitor patients with other diseases. i.e. Diabetes
- Call in physician ordered prescription renewals and maintain prescription records on the EMR.
- Perform, interpret and report on non- stress tests.
Practice Environment
- Ensure adequate stock and appropriate storage of immunizations.
- Maintain clean, orderly and well-stocked examination rooms.
- Handle all specimens as infectious. Dispose of sharp objects and specimens appropriately.
- Sterilize equipment for minor surgical procedures.
Hours Of Work
This is a 0.6 FTE (3 days/week), 6 month contract position, with possibility of extension or permanent employment.
Qualifications
- Completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Minimum of three years experience in family medicine and/or obstetrics.
- Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Certification as Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) considered an asset (or willing to get)
- Certification in Obstetrical Nursing considered an asset (or willing to get)
- Honed patient assessment and triage skills
- Knowledge of and working experience with, computer systems and applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively as a healthcare team
- Familiarity with child safety/protection legislation and associated community partners
