Job Description:
Medical Assistants (MAs) provide direct patient care and administrative support in fast-paced healthcare environments. They assist with clinical procedures, ensure smooth patient flow, maintain accurate records, and promote a positive patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care and Clinical Support:
- Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight), and document in electronic health records (EHR) systems like Epic or Cerner.
- Assist providers with procedures such as biopsies, suture/staple removal, injections (e.g., vaccines, Botox), wound care, skin cancer reconstructions, acne treatments, or venipuncture/phlebotomy.
- Prepare patients for exams by interviewing for medical history, explaining procedures, and ensuring comfort/privacy.
- Collect and handle laboratory specimens (e.g., blood, urine) and perform basic diagnostic tests (e.g., EKGs, spirometry).
- Administer medications/oral treatments as directed, following HIPAA and infection control protocols.
- Support specialized care, such as IVF procedures, dermatology treatments, or behavioral health screenings.
- Administrative Duties:
- Manage front-office tasks: Greet patients, schedule appointments, verify insurance/eligibility, collect copays, and process billing.
- Answer multi-line phones, handle incoming calls for test results/appointment confirmations, and route messages efficiently.
- Maintain patient records, update demographics, and ensure compliance with electronic prescribing and referral processes.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for efficient patient flow, including rooming, check-out, and follow-up reminders.
- Stock supplies, sterilize equipment, clean exam rooms, and assist with facility maintenance for safety and readiness.
- Patient Interaction and Education:
- Provide compassionate support to diverse patients, including those with addiction, mental health needs, or chronic conditions.
- Educate patients on prep instructions, discharge plans, medication adherence, and self-care.
- Respond to patient inquiries via phone/voicemail and de-escalate concerns to promote satisfaction.
- Compliance and Quality Improvement:
- Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, and California Board of Licensed Vocational Nurses standards for medical assisting.
- Participate in quality assurance, such as process improvements for patient throughput or EMR optimization.
- Report incidents, maintain confidentiality, and support telehealth/virtual visits as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (e.g., from a community college like San Diego City College).
- Certification:
- Must be Certified from any of the below list of Board Associations:
• American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
• American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
• American Medical Technologists (AMT)
• California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants (CCBMA)
• Multi-skilled Medical Certification Institute, Inc, or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- Current and valid Medical Assistant (MA) certification from an organization approved by the Medical Board of California (e.g., AAMA, AMCA, AMT, CCBMA, NCCT).
- Experience: Minimum 3+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant is required. Only genuine experience candidates with any of the above-mentioned Association Board Certification are encouraged to apply for this role.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical knowledge: Vital signs, injections, EKGs, sterilization.
- Administrative proficiency: Microsoft Office, medical terminology, scheduling software.
- Soft skills: Excellent communication, empathy, multitasking in high-volume settings; bilingual (Spanish) highly valued.
- Other: Valid California driver's license; background check, TB test, and flu vaccination required. Must pass drug screening.
