Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery (Night Shift | 3x12-Hour | 13-Week Contract)

Shift: Nights (6:00 PM – 6:30 AM), 3x12-hour shifts per week

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (with possible extension)
Weekend Requirement: Every Other Weekend

Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) for a 13-week travel contract in Eureka, California. The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive care to laboring mothers, newborns, and postpartum patients in a high-acuity, culturally diverse setting. RNs must be skilled in circulating for cesarean sections and managing high-risk obstetric cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide skilled nursing care during all phases of labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.
- Circulate and assist during C-sections and high-risk deliveries.
- Manage induction, augmentation, and monitoring of labor using EFM (External Fetal Monitoring) and IUPC (Intrauterine Pressure Catheter).
- Administer medications including Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, Antihypertensives, Anticoagulants, and Terbutaline.
- Provide fetal heart rate interpretation and respond appropriately to abnormal patterns.
- Manage complications including hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and postpartum emergencies.
- Perform APGAR scoring, thermoregulation, and newborn assessments immediately post-delivery.
- Provide breastfeeding and postpartum education to parents.
- Maintain accurate documentation in Epic charting system.
- Follow all infection control, isolation precautions, and PPE protocols.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams such as respiratory, radiology, and pharmacy services.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (ADN or BSN required)
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of recent Labor & Delivery experience
- Experience with high-risk OB and culturally diverse populations preferred
Licensure & Certifications:
- Active California RN license (required at time of submission)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – required
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring – preferred
Core Clinical Skills
Labor & Delivery Management
- Assist with vaginal and high-risk deliveries
- Amnioinfusion, sterile vaginal exams, triage of obstetric patients
- C-section circulation and recovery
- Assist with forceps/vacuum extraction (preferred)
- Management of hemorrhage and shock situations
Antepartum & Postpartum Care
- Perform Non-Stress Tests (NSTs)
- Manage pregnancy-induced hypertension and postpartum hemorrhage
- Provide Foley care, fundus and lochia assessments, wound and incision care
- Support breastfeeding and parent education
Newborn Care
- Provide immediate neonatal stabilization, thermoregulation, and care under radiant warmers
- Complete cord care, metabolic screening, and infant identification
- Manage phototherapy and neonatal hypoglycemia
- Conduct discharge teaching and safety education
Technical & Procedural Competencies
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Use of infusion pumps, IV drips, and monitoring systems
- Maintain and manage central lines (CVC/PICC)
- Pain management including epidural and nitrous oxide monitoring
- Telemetry interpretation (preferred)

- Facility Beds: 150
- L&D Unit Beds: 15
- Rooms: 11
- Daily Census: 15–20 patients
- Patient Ratios: Typically 1:1–3, depending on acuity
- Patient Population: Neonates, Infants, and Adults
Additional Details
- Charting System: Epic (required)
- Orientation: 40 hours
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off once per two-week pay period
