ROLE PURPOSE
The Trainee Embryologist will receive structured training and contribute to laboratory services that support assisted reproduction treatments, diagnostic andrology, and the cryopreservation of gametes and embryos.
The role must follow the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) Act and professional Codes of Conduct. The Trainee Embryologist will keep accurate records, assist with data analysis, audit and research and support the delivery of safe, high-quality services for patients.
Working under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager and Senior Embryologist, the role involves managing a defined workload, collaborating with colleagues in the embryology team, and contributing to the wider unit.
DUTIES and OBJECTIVES
Key Responsibilities:
- Report to the Laboratory Manager
- Follow Health and Safety, COSHH, and manual handling procedures
- Comply with UK regulations and HFEA requirements
- Apply risk management principles and report accidents or near misses
- Practise aseptic technique and clean room standards, including cleaning protocols
- Prepare dishes, tubes, and media for assisted conception procedures
- Use databases to record and manage laboratory information
- Undertake supervised training in clinical embryology, including:
- • Transvaginal oocyte recovery (TVOR)
- • Semen analysis and sperm preparation
- • ICSI and IVF inseminations
- • Embryo transfer (ET)
- • Embryo and oocyte vitrification and warming
- Develop knowledge of all aspects of fertility treatment
- Build a professional development portfolio toward HCPC registration
- Communicate sensitively with patients, providing clear and empathetic information
- Support maintenance of quality control processes
- Review and discuss clinic and regulatory consents with patients
- Contribute to embryology meetings to share ideas and support continuous improvement
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and high standards of patient care
Train in and perform IVF procedures and laboratory duties in line with SOPs, the HF&E Act, and applicable regulations, safeguarding patients and their gametes/embryos.
Procedures include:
- Oocyte retrieval and preparation for insemination
- Diagnostic semen analysis
- Sperm preparation for IUI, IVF, and ICSI
- Preparation of surgically retrieved sperm samples
- Insemination techniques, including ICSI
- Fertilisation assessment
- Embryo development assessment to cleavage and blastocyst stage
- Gamete and embryo cryopreservation/vitrification
- Work under the Laboratory Manager to analyse complex data, evaluate sperm, egg, and embryo quality, and develop competence in planning and undertaking IVF procedures
- Ensure proper written consent is obtained before any embryological procedures
- Monitor laboratory consumables and media, maintain full traceability of goods, place orders according to SOPs, and update order databases
- Support maintenance of laboratory equipment, reporting any non-conformities to the Laboratory Manager or Senior Embryologist
- Assist with maintaining validation records and internal audit processes
- Participate in routine and specific laboratory cleaning, complete checklists, and report concerns
- Prepare patient laboratory notes and culture dishes/tubes for daily procedures, raising any issues to the Laboratory Manager or Senior Embryologist
- Develop competence in patient communication, including giving results, updating on treatment progress, and discussing treatment adjustments where needed, while handling sensitive or distressing information with empathy
- Develop competence in interpreting and discussing complex laboratory results with clinicians, providing advice based on data and scientific literature
- Gain experience in maintaining laboratory compliance with HFEA guidelines and licence requirements, including SOP updates and QA monitoring
- Participate in audit, troubleshooting, and SOP revisions as required
- Support service evaluation and development activities

Qualifications
Essential
- BSc degree in Biological Sciences or related subject
- Good knowledge of cell biology, physiology, and genetics
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
- MSc in Reproductive Science or related discipline
- ACE Certificate in Embryology or equivalent training
- Eligibility or intention to register with the HCPC
Experience

- Laboratory experience gained during degree or employment
- Experience handling biological samples and following protocols
- Experience maintaining accurate scientific records

- Previous experience in an embryology, IVF, or clinical laboratory setting
- Experience of quality assurance and audit processes
