This is a remote role for the Chief Science Officer (CSO) position. LEGACY is seeking a highly experienced Chief Science Officer to lead its scientific strategy and research initiatives in genetic engineering, CRISPR, developmental biology, and embryology. This executive role is central to LEGACY’s mission of advancing biotechnology through rigorous research, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, proven leadership in life sciences, and a track record of driving scientific programs from concept to execution. The CSO will work closely with other C-Suite leaders to ensure LEGACY’s scientific direction aligns with its long-term goals and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Strategy & Innovation
- Develop and implement LEGACY’s scientific roadmap across genetic engineering, CRISPR, developmental biology, and embryological research.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies for integration into LEGACY’s platform.
- Translate complex scientific concepts into actionable strategies for executive leadership and stakeholders.
Research Oversight & Execution
- Lead internal and external research teams in designing and executing experiments, protocols, and developmental workflows.
- Ensure scientific rigor, reproducibility, and ethical integrity across all projects.
- Guide the development of novel organisms and biotechnological applications.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with LEGACY’s executive team to align scientific work with business strategy and operational planning.
- Contribute to investor presentations and strategic communications by articulating the scientific vision and impact.
- Support regulatory and legal teams in navigating compliance related to genetic modification, bioethics, and intellectual property.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Build and lead a high-performing scientific team across disciplines including molecular biology, genetic engineering, embryology, and bioinformatics.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.
- Mentor junior scientists and collaborators to support professional development and research quality.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proven leadership in genetic engineering, CRISPR, developmental biology, or embryology.
- Demonstrated success in designing and executing complex biological experiments and workflows.
- Deep understanding of molecular mechanisms, lineage development, and organismal design.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing genetic modification and embryological research.
- Strong communication skills to articulate scientific vision to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience managing cross-disciplinary teams and fostering collaborative innovation.
- Prior experience in leadership roles, such as a Senior Scientist or Research Director, demonstrating a capability for motivating high-performing scientific teams.
- A proven track record of delivering key milestones in previous work.
- The ability to translate scientific discoveries into commercial strategy and manage R&D budgets.
- Strategic vision: The capacity to identify promising research areas and align scientific goals with broader business objectives.
- Communication skills: The ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts to a variety of stakeholders, including investors and the media.
- Regulatory knowledge: A strong understanding of regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA) to ensure research compliance.
Educational Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant scientific field
- Relevant fields include:
- Genetics
- Molecular Biology
- Biotechnology
- Biomedical Sciences
- Biochemistry
- Bioengineering
- Minimum of 5 years of postdoctoral research and or career experience in a relevant field.
- Experience in evolutionary biology is a strong plus.
- Master of Business Administration (MBA) a plus.
Pay:
As this role is part of a start-up, the comp structure will initially be based on a proportionate share of the company’s equity initially, followed by a generous salary package later. In addition to this, as a C-Suite executive, you will be classified as a company co-founder and general partner.
