- Unit: Postpartum (Mother Baby)
- Location: (BMH) Bakersfield Memorial Hospital
- # beds: 12 L & D and 6 triage beds (overflow area where can potentially have laboring patients--do not deliver in this area--moved to actual L&D bed)
- Ratios: Per ACOG Guidelines (2:1)--1 to 1 when actually delivering
- Certs: BLS & ACLS (MUST BE THROUGH AHA), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Licensure: Current CA RN License
- Are there techs available and if so what are their responsibilities? How many techs are on the unit during the night shift? We have CNAs 1-2 at a time, depending on the department census (1 CNA 12+ patients; 2 CNA 22+patients). We also have Unit secretaries, lactation support, and charge nurses who do not take patients unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, the nurses do not do hearing screens or birth certificates, as we have aids and clerks for that as well.
- Are there high acuity patients on the unit? Rarely. Stage 3 PPH are transferred back to L&D or ratio is reduced, depending on staffing; Pre-eclamptic patients on mag are kept in L&D. Low risk antepartum patients only in the department. We do biliblankets in the department, but no other phototherapy, high acuity infants are transferred to NICU. (we do our own NAS screening and late preterm monitoring, but transfer to NICU if symptoms develop)
- Do they have a secretary at the desk that answers call lights or do nurses carry phones (what is their form of communication)? BOTH. WE have unit secretaries who help answer phones, however it's everyone's responsibility to help answer call lights and phones, as we are a large PP unit. ALL staff also carry their own hospital provided phone.
- How many shift of orientation is available on the unit? 3 shifts orientation
