Songhees Nation is seeking a Registered Nurse to join our small, collaborative health team. This role holds a focus on child, youth, and maternal health, but also provides broader public health services across the lifespan. This position supports culturally safe, community-led health services through clinical care, immunizations, home visits, STBBI services, drop-in care, and collaboration on public health programming. The RN will work in close partnership with the LPN to ensure holistic, integrated care, with the LPN focused primarily on adults and Elders and the RN on children, youth, maternal health, and public health.
The successful candidate will be a flexible, relational nurse committed to team-based care, shared responsibility, and meaningful relationships with community members. This position requires humility, trauma-informed practice, and an understanding that as a guest on Lekwungen territory, care must reflect community priorities. You are a skilled and adaptable Registered Nurse with a strong foundation in public health, primary care and a passion for maternal, child, and youth health. You value working as part of a small, interdisciplinary team where flexibility, collaboration, and shared responsibility are essential. You are comfortable balancing independent practice with regular communication and believe in building strong relationships through cultural humility, trauma-informed care, and relational accountability. What you’ll be doing
Duties include, but aren’t limited to:
Child, Youth, and Maternal Health Focus
- Provide holistic, trauma-informed nursing care to children, youth, and families.
- Support prenatal and postpartum clients in collaboration with midwives and the LPN.
- Conduct early childhood health assessments and respond to parent/caregiver concerns.
- Engage in home visits and outreach to improve access and continuity of care.
- Participate in maternal and child health programming alongside Education, CFS, and HeadStart teams.
Public Health and STBBI Services
- Lead and manage all immunization programs across the lifespan, including infant, child, school-based, adult, and Elder clinics.
- Provide STBBI screening, treatment, education, and linkage to care.
- Respond to public health alerts and emerging concerns through outreach and education.
- Deliver wellness education on topics such as sexual health, parenting, chronic disease prevention, and illness prevention.
- Plan and deliver public health clinics and campaigns (e.g., flu, COVID, measles, health promotion events).
Drop-In and Primary Access Responsibilities
- Act as the first clinical point of contact for any community member presenting during drop-in hours.
- Provide front-line assessment, triage, and initial care for a wide range of health concerns.
- Collaborate with other team members to refer or transfer cases requiring ongoing follow-up.
- Ensure accurate documentation of all visits and clear communication with relevant providers.
- Support continuity of care through timely follow-up, care coordination, and patient advocacy.
Collaboration and Team Integration
- Work in close partnership with the LPN, who will maintain primary focus on adult and Elder care.
- Participate in daily or weekly check-ins with the LPN to ensure seamless care across client populations.
- Engage in case conferencing, collaborative planning, and shared care strategies.
- Contribute to broader clinic operations and team-based problem-solving.
Program Development and Evaluation
- Co-develop family-centered and public health programs with input from the Director.
- Track participation and outcomes, adapting programming as needed.
- Seek pre-approval for any new programs or materials from the Director of Clinical Services.
Documentation and Accountability
- Maintain timely, accurate documentation aligned with BCCNM and FNHA standards.
- Participate in quarterly performance reviews and team debriefs.
- Engage in relational repair processes where needed to uphold a safe and respectful work environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Current registration in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Certification in STI Practice is an asset.
- Immunization certification and Basic Life Support (BLS) Level C.
- 2–3 years’ experience in child, youth, maternal or public health nursing, preferably in a community setting
- Strong understanding of cultural safety, trauma-informed care, and relational accountability
- Experience working in Indigenous communities or with diverse populations is essential
- Understanding of First Nations cultural principles, protocols, and the impact of culture on healthcare.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with access to a vehicle considered an asset
