Job Summary
The Life giver Support Worker – Prenatal/Postnatal plays a vital role in uplifting and supporting Indigenous women, families, and Two-Spirit/LGBTQIA+ parents during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early parenting journey. Rooted in Nak’azdli Whut’en values, this position emphasizes culturally safe, trauma-informed care, education, and advocacy. Working under the guidance of the Community Health Nurse (CHN), this role provides essential support to families with infants up to 12 months old and promotes health and wellness through culturally guided programming.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct Family Support:

Provide emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.

Meet with all newly pregnant individuals/families and complete initial registration into the CPNP/Prenatal Program.

Provide home visits, parenting education, breastfeeding support, and maternal nutrition guidance.

Attend initial postpartum home visits with CHN or assigned care provider.

Offer support to families navigating postpartum depression, anxiety, addictions, housing, and mental wellness.
Health System Navigation & Advocacy:

Assist Life givers in accessing a family physician and completing intake forms.

Refer and accompany individuals to appointments when needed and appropriate.

Advocate for families to access services such as Jordan’s Principle, mental health care, housing, and financial supports.

Work collaboratively with CHN, prenatal nurse, midwives, physicians, doulas, and other care providers to develop care plans.
Community & Cultural Programming:

Facilitate connections with Elders, traditional teachings, and ceremony.

Provide postnatal welcome packages and model/support breastfeeding in homes and community.

Assist with group sessions for prenatal and postnatal care, guided by Nak’azdli traditions and language.

Promote cultural revitalization and traditional birth knowledge within the community.
Program Coordination & Communication:

Maintain accurate records and data entry for program tracking and evaluation.

Use social media and digital platforms to promote programs and services.

Participate in meetings, deliver presentations, and collaborate with service partners.
Qualifications:
Required:
-
Experience in Indigenous maternal/child health or prenatal/postnatal care.

Strong communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.

Familiarity with trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches.

Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clear Criminal Record Check.

Proficiency in using computers, social media, and office equipment.

Food Safe Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Preferred/Assets:

Knowledge of Nak’azdli Whut’en culture, language, and traditions.

Certification as a Childbirth or Breastfeeding Educator (or willingness to complete).

Trauma-Informed Care training (or willingness to complete).
Working Conditions:

Frequent computer use and sitting for extended periods.

Occasional lifting, driving, and event support.

Flexible availability for some evening or weekend programming as needed.

Hours of Work
Your regular hours or work will be from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm for 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday and it is expected that all work will be completed within your regular working hours. However, you may be required from time to time to work outside your normal hours of work or on weekends.
