In the 1980s, an “unhealthy” vaginal pH was been defined as anything above pH 4.5 based on studies done almost exclusively in white women. But we now know that for many Asian, Black, and Hispanic women, a pH above 4.5 is completely normal. This oversight contributes to high misdiagnosis rates for vaginal infections, PCOS, and menopause - all of which raise vaginal pH. The underlying problem? Vaginal pH tests are outdated, imprecise, and biased. We are building pHera to change that. We’re developing high-resolution pH test strips, readable by smartphone camera and interpreted with machine learning to deliver accurate, lab-quality, quantitative results to women and doctors anytime, anywhere!
