The Cytology Preparatory Technician is responsible for the preparing microscopic cytology slides for diagnostic purposes within the Cytopathology Department.
- Unpacks specimens from various provider offices and routes specimens by type/insurance to various staging areas

Receives and accessions Cytology and/or Molecular specimens and determine acceptability
- Rejects specimens that do not meet laboratory acceptability criteria and place in Test Question for reporting

Knowledge of specific protocols related to Self-Pay/OB Self-Pay/Prompt Pay patients

Assigns computer generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy, and verifies data entered into Orchard laboratory information system

Prepares specimens for send-out to various reference labs or couriers as necessary

Recognizes when information presented on requisitions is unclear or ambiguous and follow corrective actions to be taken.

Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory work space according to established protocols
- Utilizes appropriate resources to answer inquiries for basic customer related issues

Understands and follows all company policies and procedures including those relating to safety and quality assurance

Follows established testing protocols and procedures for Cobas Prime Pre-Analytical System operation

Follows established testing protocols and procedures for T2000 operation
-
Follows established testing protocols and procedures for T5000 autoloader operation
-
Follows established testing protocols and procedures for automatic stainer and coverslipper operation
-
Follows established testing protocols and procedures for Imaging station operation

Follows established testing protocols and procedures for reprocessing pap specimens for various limitation factors
-
Follows established testing protocols and procedures for the processing of NONGYN specimens
-
Follows established testing protocols and procedures to ensure quality patient care
-
Recognizes personal limitations and seek guidance from supervisors or managers when needed

Organizes and distributes prepared cytology slides to Cytotechnologist as needed
-
Resolves and documents problem specimens
-
Resolves and troubleshoots pending specimen list
-
Disposes of biohazardous material appropriately

Perform additional duties including scan requisitions and/or Cytology QA, adding specimen to the specimen tracking, or other duties as needed
Qualifications:

Meets minimum criteria for education and training as required to perform job duties

High school Diploma required
-
Ability to use a computer and enter data efficiently, including Microsoft office programs

Knowledge of Orchard laboratory information system preferred
-
Knowledge of eClinical Works EMR preferred

Proficient in data entry and record keeping

Great attention to detail

Ability to multi-task, self-motivated, reliable, accountable, and conscientious

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Must currently be competent and proficient in utilizing each of the instruments as well as processes currently in use within the department
