Job Summary:
Provides leadership support to the staff of Obstetrics department and ensure ongoing evaluation of and improvement in performance through data analysis, benchmark comparison and compliance with regulatory standards. Assures integration of patient safety principles within the organization. The manager works closely with the Director of Acute Care, medical staff, directors and department managers, nursing supervisors, clinical staff, OB department physicians, ancillary staff, registration, Medical Records, clinical analysts, Materials Management, & Human Resources. External contacts include regulatory agencies, such as the ISDH & JC, vendors, physician office staff, & peers in other hospitals or healthcare facilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees registered nurses, OB techs/aides, clerks, nursery nurse practitioners.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and guidance to the staff RNs, OB techs/aides, clerks, nursery nurse practitioners.
- Accountable for nursing care given by nursing staff 24 hours/day.
- Responsible for development, coordination, implementation, evaluation, & monitoring activities of the nursing staff of Obstetrics department.
- Makes rounds in Obstetrics department at least daily & more frequently if needed.
- Investigates patient complaints & follows up with appropriate staff & patient liaison.
- Stays current with new policies & procedures. Assures policies & procedures are up to date & revised as needed.
- Promotes a culture of patient safety & “Just Culture” philosophy to encourage event reporting & personal accountability for following safe practices.
- Participates in the Patient Safety Team
- Participates in RCA as indicated.
- Conducts Patient Care Conferences to discuss patient complaints as warranted.
- Assures that the necessary supplies & equipment are available & in appropriate working condition.
- Provides support to staff during patient complaints & intervenes to assure customer satisfaction recovery.
- Successfully develops & uses cost, quality, & satisfaction measures as outcome criteria to make improvements. Uses appropriate, reliable, & valid data as primary basis for making decisions, solving problems, & evaluating processes & outcomes. Supports & participates in a team-approach to performance improvement.
- Ensures the department is compliant with all regulatory & accreditation requirements, including federal, state (ISDH), local, & the JC.
- Prepares annual FTE, operating, & capital budgets. Responsible for monitoring the compliance to established budgets & any corrective action necessary to achieve compliance.
- Collaborates with the nursing staff; develops annual goals & objectives for the department that are consistent with the Hospital’s mission, goals, & strategic business plan.
- Responsible for directly supervising the department(s) team members, including hiring, training, disciplinary actions, & terminations. Continuously evaluates performance of team members & completes annual written performance evaluations in a timely manner.
- Responsible for development of strategies to improve the performance, effectiveness, & morale of the department team members.
- Fosters personal & professional development of self & team members. Provides opportunities for education & development of self & staff as part of work activities. Supports risk taking.
- Ensures positive customer relations. As a manager & role model, ensures that team members understand the patients’ needs & provide courteous individualized attention to patients, visitors, & fellow team members.
- Continuously monitors department operating systems, policies, procedures, & activities & revises as necessary.
- Attends Leadership meetings. Responsible for the chain-of-communication, to communicate the appropriate information to the department team members in a manner that is supportive of the Hospital & administrative decisions. Conducts department meetings at least quarterly.
- Builds & maintains an effective interpersonal & organizational network that enables communication of operation initiatives to management, associates, & self. Demonstrated self-awareness. Listens & uses feedback in communication.
- The manager is expected to serve on committees, as deemed appropriate to the position & reflect positively on the Hospital in active participation in community activities.
- Develops competitor awareness through communication, investigation, & knowledge of competitors’ activities.
- Attends required educational programs sponsored by MMH or other programs as deemed necessary.
- Attends appropriate Medical Staff committee meetings to present & discuss Obstetrics department performance improvement activities.
- Willingness to respond, as a manager, to the needs of the Hospital beyond the ordinary work shift.
