Title: Certified Nurse Midwife
Reports To: Practice Administrator
FLSA Status: Exempt
Summary: This individual will be responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.
Essential Duties: Essential job duties for this position include the following items. Other duties must be performed as assigned or required.
- Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the certified nurse midwife
- Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations, document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests
- Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, and staff
- Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status. Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s)
- Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care as defined by the nurse midwifery service
- Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries
- Utilize prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Iowa Board of Nursing
- Document all prescriptions in patient’s medical record
- Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions
- Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient
- Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits
- Develops and participates in office and community education
- Assists physicians in surgical procedures as needed
- Attend required meetings and participate in committees and professional development as required
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods
- Maintain knowledge of and complies with established policies and procedures, including OSHA.

- Stay current with changing technology, including software and industry specific programs
