Position Overview:
This position functions independently and exercises critical nursing judgement to ensure the provision of quality nursing care and health education in accordance with best nursing practices.
This position is responsible for carrying out various job functions for Public Health Nursing Programs. Duties may include but are not limited to: Communicable Disease Investigation including STD/HIV Counseling and Testing, Immunization clinic staffing, working with the Maternal Child Health and Child Care Health Consultant programs and Community Health Education.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in planning, directing, developing and evaluating community health programs in the county as they pertain to women, adolescents and children.
- Provide health education to individuals, families and community groups in various settings
- Serve as a resource for area professionals, daycares and the public by responding to requests for information.
- Plan, direct, develop and deliver child health programs to child care workers within the specified program guidelines
- Investigate health problems and hazards such as communicable diseases and utilize evidence-based sources and plans of action to address these issues.
- Document nursing interventions, therapeutic measure administered, patient's reactions, patient teaching and understanding.
- Give immunizations according to CDC guidelines.
- Schedule and perform lab draws following physicians order. Follow up with physician and clients as indicated.
- Perform urine pregnancy tests, provide appropriate counseling/referral information to clients and assist with completion of Medicaid presumptive eligibility applications as needed.
- Administer and read TB skin test. Follow –up on suspicious and positive results in a timely manner according to protocol.
- Check for and demonstrate method used in detecting head lice. Provide evidence-based information and support in eradication of infestations.
- Collaborate with other health care professionals and service providers to ensure optimal patient care
- Attend meetings, conferences and workshops to further professional competence.
- Other duties as required for the position.

This position is overseen by the Nursing Supervisor.

Qualifications & Skills:
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing OR with an Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing OR completion on a Nursing Program at an accredited diploma school of Nursing.
- Must possess and maintain a license as a Registered Nurse from the Missouri State board of Nursing.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Public Health experience preferred, but not required.
Good oral communication skills
TRAINING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Develop an individualized training plan based on the results of a Core Competency Assessment.
- Complete 8 contact hours related to the individualized training needs identified in the training plan.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard reach, stoop kneel to install computer equipment
- Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
- Light to moderate lifting is required
