Title: Nurse Paralegal
Location: Bridgeport, CT (hybrid work options available)
Reports To: Senior Attorney
Regular Work Hours: Monday- Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
Employment Status: Full-time/Non-exempt (overtime eligible)
Base Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented nurse paralegal to join our medical malpractice investigation team. The ideal candidate will be able to leverage their medical training and clinical experience to assist an experienced team of legal and medical professionals in investigating and managing complex medical negligence claims. This position requires a proactive individual with excellent organizational and communication skills, who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
Intake and Initial Case Evaluation
- Conduct thorough intake interviews with potential clients and referring attorneys to gather critical information regarding potential claims.
- Evaluate merit and strength of claims, in consultation with a supervising attorney, based on initial information and medical context.
Investigation of Claims
- Create detailed medical investigation plans for qualified claims.
- Conduct in-depth investigations into qualified claims, including identification of medical specialists needed for consultation and support.
- Collaborate with attorneys and other medical professionals within and outside the firm to explore theories of liability and build strong case foundations.
Medical Records Management
- Request, organize, and review medical records pertinent to potential claims.
- Analyze and interpret medical records to identify the likely cause of adverse patient outcomes and any potential deviations from acceptable standards of practice.
- Prepare comprehensive summaries and timelines for review by attorneys and independent medical specialists.
Pre-Litigation Support
- Assist attorneys with the preparation of legal documents and other court filings associated with the commencement of a lawsuit.
Client Communication
- Keep clients informed and up-to-date on the status of claim investigations and help attorneys educate clients about the strengths and weaknesses of potential claims.
- Provide compassionate and professional support to clients and their families during the pre-litigation process.
Qualifications
Education
- RN degree required. Paralegal certification or degree in paralegal studies preferred but not required.
Clinical Background
- At least 10 years of recent experience in the nursing field is required, preferably in a hospital setting.
Legal Experience
- Prior legal and/or medical risk management experience is preferred but not required.
Skills
- Proficiency in analyzing medical records.
- Thorough understanding of medical terminology and an ability to conduct independent medical research.
- Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft 365 Suite of applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
