An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Womens CSU at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. We are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic, and experienced midwife with a specialist interest in education and staff development to join the Clinical Education Team on a fixed term contract for 7 months.
You must have a broad range of knowledge and experience within maternity services and be innovative, proactive and compassionate and be able to disseminate innovation and learning in a supportive way.
You need to have a sound understanding of the evidence base and be able to translate this into practice. As a visible and approachable role model you will provide specialist advice to support a broad range of colleagues, working alongside them in clinical areas to develop a skilled, compassionate and resilient workforce. You will mostly be working in the hospital setting with a particular focus on supporting the delivery of clinical skills, emergency and simulation training.

Main duties of the job
The Jobholder will play an essential role supporting the Lead Clinical Educator (Band 7), Team Leaders, Matrons and Head of Midwifery, by facilitating midwifery education, training and practice development within the Women CSU.
The job holder is responsible for assessing the quality of clinical and other practice learning environments, and proposing interventions within midwifery for improvement.
The job holder will facilitate the development of clinical practice mentors/key trainers, providing supervision through bedside clinical support, and continuous professional development activities.
The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working to ensure the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care.
The job holder will work alongside and support clinical staff to deliver care to the agreed standards.
Support new starters (registered and non-registered) through a formalised and structured induction and preceptorship programme. Provide formal and informal education and training to registered and non-registered staff.
Identify learning and development opportunities for staff and promote continuous quality improvement.

Clinical
Assist the Clinical Educator in supporting the Team Leaders/ Matrons, Head of Midwifery in the development of midwifery practice, strategy and business plans.

Work in partnership with the Clinical Educator/Clinical Governance and Risk management team to develop and review guidelines and work based learning packages.

Work collaboratively with the clinical Educator to produce quarterly reports.
Provide Support within the Education Team with work experience and volunteering
Demonstrate that Clinical Practice educators are fit for purpose to discharge their educational roles and responsibilities, appropriately reviewed by the Clinical Educator Band 7 within their appraisals.
Participate in reviewing the existing induction and preceptorship programmes and adapt to reflect the needs of the service and the individual.
Participate in the development of training development packages for Midwifery staff.
Support the induction and development of staff through use of agreed development packages and individualised induction packages.
Support staff in association with Team Leaders, the Clinical Educator, and Matrons in facilitating individual performance development plans.
Support staff to develop evidence based practice and research activities to further enhance patient safety and care.
Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education and mandatory training working with Organisational Learning.
Support the Clinical Educator in evaluating educational programmes to ensure clinical areas achieve and maintain an accredited educational learning environment for students.
Respond to request for provision of targeted education/training programmes in response to incidents and or identified clinical need
Facilitate and deliver educational programmes for staff at all levels.
Collaborate with Organisational learning on provision of training and education.
Liaise with outside agencies in the development of suitable education and training opportunities for staff.
Leadership

Assist the Clinical Educator in preparation of reports as to progress of staff, current status against required standards and development needs for the unit.
Raise concerns with regards risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
I) PHYSICAL EFFORT
The job holder will have to:
Lift, move or transport flip chart stands within a room
Move tables and chairs in training rooms, and rearrange seating.
Attend meetings as a participant, or facilitator
Spend long periods of time operating a computer, using keyboards and static computers. Required to input data using a variety of technologic methodologies.
Move & handle -patients and equipment on an infrequent basis:
- Patients 10-120kg (with lifting aids)
- Equipment medical equipment, specialised mattresses (weight 1-20kg).
Frequently stand, sit, walk, kneel and crouch to attend to patient needs.
Be able to have dexterity and manipulation when undertaking clinical procedures such as administration of medications and intravenous drugs, complex dressings.
Ii) MENTAL EFFORT
The job holder will:
Have continuous mental effort/concentration in relation to responding to and meeting patients midwifery care needs (e.g. for 8-12 hour shift.)
Co-ordinate Ward/Dept. activities. Unpredictable workloads.
Respond to changing circumstances (e.g. changes in patient condition, prioritisation of workload).
Calculate drug doses.
Deal with complex and changing care needs of patients within an acute hospital environment (includes communication with parents/ relatives/carers).
Need robust verbal and written communication skills required at all times
Be able to concentrate and produce reports under a variety of situations including very short notice.
Be able to read and analyse DoH, RCM, NMC policy and guidance pertinent to Nursing and Midwifery and LTHT. Be able to incorporate and disseminate information.
Facilitate training sessions - requires careful planning and is time consuming. May be required to deal with difficult subject matter and people.
Iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT
The job holder will:
Observe working practices in a wide range of clinical environments. This includes may include end of life care as appropriate.
Be exposure to difficult situations including dealing with irate patients and relatives as part of investigation team in PALS.
Make verbal and written recommendations about changes required in clinical environments. This includes informing the ward team about poor performance or clinical issues.
Provide counselling and advice to Midwives, support staff, and administration staff, in areas of their poor performance.
Be exposed to difficult situations including death and dying, distressed patients and relatives/carers.
Deal with complex workload.
