Job Summary
A sonographer is a healthcare professional who uses ultrasound technology to create images of the body's internal organs and structures. These images are used to diagnose medical conditions, guide medical procedures, and monitor the progress of treatment. Sonographers work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform ultrasound examinations on patients of all ages, including adults, children, and infants.
- Prepare patients for examinations by explaining the procedure and answering any questions they may have.
- Operate ultrasound equipment and adjust settings to obtain clear images.
- Analyze ultrasound images to identify abnormalities and other medical conditions.
- Document findings in patient records.
- Assist physicians with medical procedures, such as biopsies and needle aspirations.
- Maintain and sterilize ultrasound equipment.
- Adhere to safety protocols and infection control procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in diagnostic medical sonography or a related field
- Completion of an accredited sonography program
- Current registration or certification with a professional organization, such as the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography or a related field
- Experience in a specific area of sonography, such as obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, or vascular
- Advanced certification in a specific area of sonography

- Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology

Work Environment
Sonographers typically work in a hospital or clinic setting. They may also work in a private practice or mobile ultrasound unit. Sonographers usually work full-time, but may also work part-time or on a per-diem basis.
