The Deputy Chief Midwife is a member of the Women’s Services Directorate Management Team (DMT) and of the Executive Committee of the Evelina London Clinical Group. Line managed by the Clinical Director for Women’s Services, and supported professionally by the Chief Midwife at GSTT, the Deputy Chief Midwife is the operational lead for Midwifery services within the organisation.
The GSTT Maternity services delivers approximately 6,400 NHS births per annum, and includes approximately 300 private births in our purpose built Westminster Private Maternity Suite. GSTT Maternity services deliver care to our local population across South East London, within our catchment areas of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, as well as providing both routine and specialist care to patients beyond these areas. We provide a comprehensive Fetal and Maternal Medicine pathway, which is integrated with Evelina London specialist services. Our services are also integrated with Kings College London, with an extensive academic portfolio directly aligned to our NHS offering.
The Deputy Chief Midwife’s pivotal duty is to provide day to day operational and professional leadership and role modelling to the professional group within the organisation. The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of high quality, cost effective midwifery care within a set budget, and is responsible for meeting key performance indicators and regulatory standards linked to maternity services. Line managing and overseeing senior midwifery teams, the Deputy Chief Midwife will be highly visible to our midwifery workforce, delivering regular clinical sessions in both acute and community sessions.
The postholder will support the Chief Midwife with all aspects of the professional portfolio, including the trusts involvement in the South East London Local Maternity System, pan-London and national maternity programmes, and representing the Midwifery profession at an organisational level. Deputy Chief Midwife will also be expected to forge a strong working relationship with the Maternity Voices Partnership.
The Deputy Chief Midwife is jointly responsible with the General Manager and Head of Obstetrics for the operational delivery of the legal and governance agenda in maternity services, including the delivery of schemes in line with NHS Resolutions (NHSR), and the introduction of specific safety and quality schemes.
