Position Summary

This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grantor.

Under the direction of the Senior Epidemiologist, assists in developing and implementing the Shelby County Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Strategic Plan by conducting public health surveillance and epidemiological investigations and documenting the impact of Infant Mortality in Shelby County.

Pay Grade: 55

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Minimum Qualifications

1. One (1) year of experience in a public health setting, healthcare or epidemiology, statistics, or a related field; AND

2. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, public health, healthcare, or related field; OR

3. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.

4. Experience in public-facing communication and education on social media platforms is preferred.

5. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Conducts public health surveillance and epidemiological investigations using multiple systems and applications i.e., emergency room chief complaints data, forensic center data, and other sources as appropriate to monitor community health status.
2. Monitors and documents show the trends of reported infant deaths and unintentional injuries in Shelby County.
3. Mobilizes community partnerships for collective impact to identify and propose solutions to MCH-related problems.
4. Coordinates response efforts with Epidemiologists working on infant mortality issues in other states and local health departments in Tennessee. Links local investigations with state and federal cluster and outbreak investigations.
5. Conducts research using existing data sources to address identified needs or gaps in local public health systems specific to infant mortality.
6. Evaluates mitigation actions through exercises and preparedness activities.
7. Analyzes primary and secondary epidemiological data related to MCH, PRAMS, BFGSS, YRBS, live birth, fetal death, link live birth/infant death data, etc.
8. Provides data and information for the MCH and Child Death Review teams concerning corrective actions, programs, or initiatives and offers suggestions based on data trends.
9. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

KSAs

1. Extensive knowledge of the principles of public health surveillance and the application of epidemiological methods to public health issues.

2. Knowledge of infection control practices.

3. Excellent skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

4. Ability to train, coordinate, review, and evaluate the activities of disease surveillance and investigation.

5. Ability to manage, manipulate, analyze, and visualize large datasets using packages such as SAS, R, ArcGIS, Tableau, REDCap, and Microsoft Excel.

6. Ability to solve problems, be internally motivated, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task.

7. Able to work independently and in a group to accomplish tasks with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

8. Considerable knowledge of the organization of and relationships among state, county, and city governments in matters relating to disease surveillance and investigation activities.

Special Requirements

Must be able to be on-call and work nights and weekends.
