Job Description & Key Responsibilities
- Daily reconciliation of physical inventory in liquid nitrogen tanks with electronic records in our LIMS
- Fill, monitor, and maintain multiple LN₂ bulk tanks and dry shippers; perform regular temperature checks and alarm response
- Package, label, and track specimens with strict chain-of-custody for audits
- Prepare, validate, and ship vapor shippers domestically and internationally while completing all required dangerous goods (IATA) and Health Canada documentation
- Process semen samples for cryopreservation, freezing, thawing, and storage (e.g. prepare, fill, seal, and freeze samples)
- Perform semen analyses — assess sperm count, motility, morphology and other parameters following standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate lab equipment — microscopes, freezers, cryopreservation equipment, and other specialized instruments
- Ensure strict adherence to laboratory protocols, quality control procedures, and sample traceability
- Label, document, and enter sample and donor data into the lab information system, maintaining accurate and confidential records
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment — including cleaning, sterilizing glassware or instruments, disposal of bio-waste as per safety standards
- Collaborate with clinical or administrative staff as needed (e.g. coordinate sample receipt, storage, distribution, and respond to lab-related inquiries)
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related field (or equivalent lab experience)
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy in sample handling and record-keeping.
- Comfortable working extensively with liquid nitrogen
- Ability to follow SOPs, quality-control procedures, and regulatory/lab safety guidelines
- Good communication skills — both verbal and written. Ability to work as part of a team in a lab environment
- Willingness to work with sensitive biological material, maintain confidentiality and handle samples carefully under strict protocols
- Flexibility for weekend and occasional holiday shifts
Preferred / Asset
- Previous andrology, tissue banking, or fertility clinic experience
- Experience operating lab equipment relevant to cryogenics / sperm processing (microscopes, dewars, freezing/thawing systems, vapor shippers, etc.)
- Familiarity with Health Canada regulations for semen processing and distribution (Human Cells, Tissues and Organs regulations, Safety of Sperm and Ova Regulations)
- Bilingual in English and French is an asset (but not required)
