Locum Tenens Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
Location: Billings, MT
Coverage Reason: Two full-time CNM vacancies
Anticipated Start: January 22, 2025
Assignment Length: Up to 1 year
FTE Needed: 1.0 (open to splitting between multiple providers)
Board Certification: Required – American Midwifery Certification Board
Life Safety Certifications: BLS required
State License: Strongly preferred for faster onboarding
Supervision: No supervision of other healthcare providers required
Position Overview
The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will provide full-scope midwifery care within the Midwifery & Women’s Health Clinic at St. Vincent Regional Hospital. This role primarily consists of 24-hour in-house call coverage on the Labor & Delivery Unit, first-assisting at cesarean deliveries, and supporting patients throughout the intrapartum and occasional outpatient processes.
This is a collaborative practice that values teamwork, communication, and high-quality, evidence-based care in coordination with MFM and OB/GYN colleagues.
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift Type: 24-hour in-house call (7:00 AM–7:00 AM)
- Shifts per Week: 1–3, Sunday through Saturday
- Call Expectations:
- Must remain onsite for the full duration of the call shift
- Will serve as first assist for cesarean deliveries of practice patients
- May see occasional clinic patients during call (clinic is across the street via skybridge)
Practice Details
- Approx. 400 deliveries per year within the CNM practice
- Average patient volume: 2–6 patients per shift
- Preferred Experience: Minimum 2 years of full-scope midwifery practice
- Key Skills:
- Strong collaboration and co-management skills with MFM and OB/GYN teams
- Excellent communication
- Proficiency with Epic EHR
Job Responsibilities
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) practice at the top of licensure and are responsible for:
- Providing full-scope midwifery care, including health promotion and disease prevention
- Assessing, diagnosing, treating, consulting, and managing patients within scope
- Performing procedures as appropriate to specialty
- Coordinating referrals for identified health needs
- Educating patients, families, and clinical staff
- Prescribing and managing medications in accordance with state and federal requirements
- Documenting clinical care accurately and in a timely manner
- Participating in ongoing professional learning and practice improvement
- Utilizing evidence-based practice, contributing to protocol development, and supporting quality initiatives
Required Skills & Experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication

- Compassionate, approachable, responsible, and trustworthy
- Able to provide facility-verified case logs showing 30–40 deliveries within the past 36 months (personal logs not accepted)
Education, Certifications & Licensure
- Certified Nurse Midwife with current state license (Montana preferred)
- Certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board
- Eligible for State Controlled Substance License (Schedules II–V)
- Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate (Schedules II–V)
- BLS – American Heart Association
