Position Summary:
Provides safe, therapeutic, and efficient nursing care to patients across the obstetrics/perinatal continuum, including C-section post-surgical, labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care. Implements evidence-based nursing practices, coordinates with healthcare teams, supervises support staff as needed, and ensures adherence to hospital and departmental standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement individualized, goal-oriented nursing care based on patient needs, acuity, and preferences.
 - Provide comprehensive care for patients returning from surgery and high-risk obstetric or neonatal patients, including monitoring, assessments, and interventions.
 - Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately; carry out medical and nursing care plans.
 - Perform labor support, including nursing/medical interventions, comfort measures, vaginal exams, and fetal heart monitoring using NICHD terminology.
 - Offer breastfeeding support, patient education, and discharge teaching.
 - Supervise, delegate, and support CNAs and other unit staff; act as Contact RN when assigned.
 - Complete thorough nursing assessments, documenting findings, laboratory results, and interdisciplinary notes accurately.
 - Develop, implement, and update patient care plans; reassess and modify care as necessary.
 - Participate in departmental meetings, goal setting, and staff education; assist with orientation and mentorship of new staff, travelers, and students.
 - Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.
 - Respond appropriately to emergencies, recognizing adverse signs and symptoms promptly.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May lead CNAs and coordinate support staff activities during assigned shifts.
 
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required:
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska or other U.S. state (Direct Hire must have applied for Alaska license before start date; Agency staff must have an active Alaska license).
 - BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certification (must be obtained within six months if not on hire).
 - High school diploma or equivalent required.
 
Experience Required:
- Minimum one year clinical nursing experience preferred; specialty experience in obstetrics/perinatal care preferred.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing care principles, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
 - Competency in recognizing adverse patient signs and acting promptly in emergencies.
 - Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, desired effects, side effects, and complications.
 - Skills in operating and monitoring medical equipment (e.g., defibrillators, suction, EKG).
 - Effective oral and written communication; accurate documentation; teamwork and leadership abilities.
 - Ability to provide guidance and leadership while fostering cooperative relationships with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
 
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands/arms; occasionally climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
 - Must lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
 
Work Environment:
- Acute care hospital setting with exposure to patients of all ages and clinical acuity levels.
