General Summary
- The Maternal-Infant Services Clinical Educator & Lactation Specialist is responsible for meeting the educational and professional development needs of nursing staff within the Obstetrics and Nursery Department to ensure competency and excellence in the care of mothers, newborns, and their families. This position provides direct lactation consultation and education to patients and families while serving as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff. The Educator & Lactation Specialist supports evidence-based practice, fosters ongoing staff development, and promotes optimal maternal–infant outcomes through comprehensive education, clinical support, community outreach, and program collaboration.
Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs for the Obstetrics and Nursery Department, addressing orientation, competency, and ongoing professional development needs.
- Ensures all education and training meet organizational, departmental, and regulatory standards, incorporating adult learning principles and evidence-based practices.
- Serves as a clinical resource and mentor in maternal–infant care and lactation management, promoting safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Provides leadership and guidance to preceptors, new graduates, and experienced staff, fostering professional growth and accountability.
- Collaborates with nursing leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to align education with clinical practice and performance improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes research, benchmarking, and evaluation tools to enhance educational programs, clinical outcomes, and policy development.
- Offers direct lactation support and education for patients and families, developing individualized care plans and promoting breastfeeding while respecting family choice.
- Coordinates and teaches prenatal, childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care classes for parents and community groups.
- Partners with community organizations and health agencies to support continuity of care and maternal–infant wellness.
- Participates in hospital and community initiatives to improve perinatal outcomes, patient satisfaction, and public awareness of maternal–child health.
- Maintains current knowledge of perinatal and lactation standards and best practices.
Education
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Work Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in maternal–infant, perinatal, or neonatal nursing preferred.
- At least one (1) year of experience in adult teaching, staff development, or clinical education required.
- Experience in lactation consultation and program coordination preferred.
- Experience developing and implementing educational programs based on community and staff needs assessments desired.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State required.
- Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required or obtained within one (1) year of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) certification preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration and critical thinking required. Frequent standing, walking, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Lifting up to 35 lbs., including handling of infants and equipment. Requires ability to multi-task and prioritize in a dynamic clinical environment.
Working Conditions
- Potential exposure to infectious disease and biohazardous materials. Occasional exposure to emotionally stressful situations involving patients and families. Slight possibility of exposure to hostile persons. Minimal physical discomfort.
