Capital Women's Care is a 150+ group of OB/GYNs located throughout Greater Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland. The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides comprehensive healthcare to women, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and reproductive health. This position collaborates with physicians and other providers when necessary to deliver patient-centered care.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for providing patients with prenatal and postnatal care.
- Provides patients with support during labor and delivery managing low-risk deliveries.
- Assist in patient education and counseling on health topics such as pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, contraception, and lifestyle choices for reproductive health.
- Collaborate with physicians to ensure coordinated, high-quality care is given to patients, especially in high-risk situations.
Primary Duties
- Perform comprehensive assessments, including reviewing medical histories and conducting physical examinations.
- Order and/or perform appropriate laboratory, diagnostic, and screening tests; seek additional information as needed through consultations with physicians and other clinicians. Integrate findings to determine diagnoses, develop therapeutic plans, and identify potential health risks.
- Provide well-woman care, including routine screenings, Pap smears, contraceptive counseling, preventive care, and management of gynecologic concerns within scope of practice.
- Conduct obstetric visits, including new OB (NOB), pregnancy confirmation, prenatal, postpartum, and other related appointments within scope of practice.
- Document all patient encounters accurately and thoroughly, updating medical charts with examination results, diagnoses, medications, and treatment plans.
- Identify potential complications, intervene promptly, and refer patients to appropriate specialists or emergency services when necessary.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives, staff training, and professional development to maintain current knowledge of best practices.
- Provide hospital-based care, including rounding, deliveries, and other patient management as needed.
Requirements
Education & Experience:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nurse Midwifery (accredited program)
- Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience, preferably in OB/GYN
Skills & Knowledge:
- Knowledge of advanced practice in obstetrics, midwifery, and women’s health, including labor, delivery, postpartum, and family planning.
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, and regulations for evaluating and delivering patient care, and professional ethics in nursing.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used in patient care, common safety hazards, and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of health promotion, health risk identification, patient education principles and techniques, and community, professional, and educational resources.
- Skilled in oral and written communication, including interviewing to obtain medical histories, providing presentations, consultations, facilitation, and documentation (e.g., medical orders, patient education materials, medical record updates).
- Proficient in using computerized health information management systems.
- Skilled in case management, time management, problem-solving, crisis intervention, multitasking, and other organizational functions.
- Skilled in adapting nursing methods to provide appropriate care, initiating emergency response and investigatory procedures, and working independently to make sound clinical decisions.
- Ability to analyze complex data to effectively manage patient care in a fast-paced environment.
Work Schedule
- Office: Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Hospital: Rotating call coverage (1 in 3/4)
