The Women’s Reproductive Health and Newborn Care program is a regional program located at McMaster University Medical Centre. The program includes a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic located on 4B1, two inpatient units, a critical care unit, Labour and Delivery and triage as well as obstetrical and gynecology clinics. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic provides outpatient services to a diverse women’s health population. Care is provided during the antenatal and postpartum phases of pregnancy for women and their families. Wards 4B, 4C and the Labour and delivery units are included in this family –centered tertiary care program.
The Physician Assistants (PAs) work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist MFM physicians in providing a broad range of medical services and acts as a physician extender to assess, analyze, prioritize, plan and evaluate care. The PAs will work with both in and out patients. The PAs, under the direction of the supervising physician, will assist in the assessment, care and management planning of newly referred MFM patients in the outpatient setting. They also will also be involved in providing ongoing outpatient antenatal care for these patients. The PAs, under the direction of the supervising physician, is responsible for providing direct patient care to inpatient antepartum and postpartum obstetrical patients including daily rounds and addressing stable acute medical issues. Care in these areas will involve taking detailed focused histories and physical examinations, order tests, reviews results, complete progress notes and organize consults based on care plans determined with attending MFMs. It will also involve dictating consultations and identifying, preparing, coordinating and dictating discharges.
Role description
The Physician Assistant (PA), under the direction and supervision of the Division Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine will be responsible for providing direct patient care for Maternal Fetal Medicine patients. The physician assistant will assist with the care of both antepartum and postpartum patients in both outpatient and inpatients settings namely\:
• Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic-4B1
• Labour and Delivery
• Labour and Delivery Triage
• 4C and 4B wards
• Women's Health ICU and Step-Down Unit
This patient care may include
1. Completing comprehensive and focused health histories,
2. Performing comprehensive and focused physical examinations,
3. Performing procedures as determined by the MFM physicians,
4. Developing care plans care in conjunction with MFM Physicians
5. Providing counseling on preventive health care,
6. Ordering, following-up on and interpreting laboratory or radiological investigations
7. Performing controlled acts as delegated by a physician.
The physician assistant will be expected to
• Adopt many of the roles that a Junior Resident would fulfill on a clinical teaching unit
• Serve as a physician extender, for the Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians.
• Assisting with outpatient organization of the clinical service,
• Co-supervise physician assistant students
• Performing other tasks within the supervising physician's scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete.
The Physician Assistant is responsible for the following Outpatients care as determined by the MFM physicians
• History and physical examinations of new consultations in the Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic and patients presenting to the labour and delivery triage area. Ordering of appropriate investigations and laboratory tests, tracking these results planning care appropriately. Requesting consultations with other specialists. Dictations of these consultations.
• Ongoing outpatient antenatal care of Maternal Fetal Medicine patients as well as ordering of appropriate further investigations and consultations that come from these visits and documentation in the health record.
The Physician Assistant is responsible for the following Inpatient care as determined by the MFM physicians\:
• Providing direct patient care to stable acute antepartum and postpartum patients,
• Daily rounds on antepartum and postpartum inpatients development of care plans with attending and/or residents and the interprofessional team
• Identifying, preparing, coordinating and dictating discharges
• Ordering tests, reviewing results, completing progress notes, organizing consults based on care plan determined with MFM
• Documentation on the health record A. Identified areas for further development-
• To assist in developing Medical Directives for the PA in particular allowing for prescribing of common medications, ultrasounds, x-rays, and ordering blood tests etc.

• Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program
• Required-recent clinical experience providing direct patient care for Obstetrical patients and or related experience
• Required Current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of pregnant women.
• Required\: demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching of women with Obstetrical concerns.

Monday to Friday, Days. May be required to work On Call and Weekends.
