The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) delivers most health and social services across the Northwest Territories (NWT), except in Hay River and Tlicho regions. It serves around 43,000 residents across 1.2 million square kilometers, including Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. Over 1,400 staff provide a full range of services, from primary to tertiary care, including mental health, addictions, and family services. While Hay River and the Tlicho Community Services Agency operate under separate boards, NTHSSA sets clinical standards and monitors compliance through service agreements. Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) in Yellowknife is the referral center for the NWT and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.
The incumbent may work in any one of the following areas during their shift:
1. Labour and Delivery (L&D) (Providing Neonatal Resuscitation Support).
2. Antenatal care and postnatal combined care of mothers and newborns
3. Nursery
4. Operating Room
The hospital, with 100 inpatient beds, offers inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), particularly in the Obstetrics (OBS) Unit, provide care to ante- and postnatal mothers and newborns, assist in cesarean sections, and offer neonatal resuscitation. LPNs are expected to work across various units, manage patient care plans, administer medications, and collaborate with the health care team. In complex situations, LPNs defer to Registered Nurses or Clinical Coordinators. They are expected to remain calm, professional, and compassionate while delivering quality, client-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provides direct, client and family centered nursing care to obstetrical clients (and their newborn infants), using a problem solving approach and in accordance with the CCPNR Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics, and NTHSSA and facility guidelines to facilitate individualized nursing care to patients of the Obstetrics Unit.
2. Within the interprofessional team, assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the plan of care with the patient, team leader and other members of the interprofessional team throughout the obstetrical experience.
3. Within the interprofessional team, collaborates with the patient, other health team members and stakeholders to meet patient care outcomes.
4. Advocates for, and with, obstetrical patients and the other members of the interprofessional team.
5. Attains and maintains current knowledge, skill and competency required to meet the needs of the obstetrical patient.
6. Demonstrates leadership in obstetrical practice in the best interest of the patient.
Typically, the qualifications for this position are attained through:
The successful completion of a Licensed Practical Nursing Diploma, the completion of an OBS specific training program (minimum 3 months) and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in obstetrics. Must be CURRENTLY registered as a Licensed Practical Nurse with College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN).
