Maternal Child Health EducatorUnder the leadership of the Director of Maternal Child Health the Senior Health Educator as a member of a multidisciplinary team, promotes population health and wellness by developing and implementing health promotion and education initiatives in a variety of settings for diverse populations in the City of Detroit. Initiatives will focus on working with families receiving services in the maternal child health programs beginning in the prenatal period. The Senior Health Educator will work to strengthen community-based partnerships involving public and private organizations to address health priorities that encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Program ImplementationDevelop and implement public health education programs.Assists with the development and implementation of multiple strategies, initiatives and activities that promote health and prevent disease in various community settings.Leads maternal child health education initiatives, coordinating with program staff to ensure high quality materials and activities are used.Evaluate the effectiveness health education programming based on comparison of results to previous and/or similar programs.Researches and retrieves information regarding evidence-based health promotion and health education initiatives from a variety of resources.Develops and promotes health education and behavior change materials and information that are medically accurate, culturally appropriate and educationally sound. Provides education to individuals, families and community groups that are adapted to their needs, lifestyle, cultural, socio-economic and health literacy level. Ensures client confidentiality, always complying with HIPAA requirements. Provide education and resources information and health education to community organizations.Prepare periodic and special reports as required. Quality ImprovementGathers, organizes and maintains data for program monitoring, evaluation and improvement. Evaluates outcomes, effectiveness of plans, and makes changes as necessary. CommunicationDelivers targeted, culturally and developmentally-appropriate information to help individuals and groups understand health promotion and disease prevention information. Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial/ethnic, sexual orientation, gender expression, and physical abilities. Adheres to ethical principles and Detroit Health Department policies in the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of data and information. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TRAINING Completion of Emergency Preparedness training to include, but not limited to FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and others as required by department staff. To ensure standards for privacy, certification in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required within 30 days of hire. Additional duties may be assigned. All Detroit Health Department employees are required to be on call during any designated local, state or national emergency, whereby, the Detroit Health Department is required to provide services for the citizens of Detroit, the State of Michigan or the United States of America.
