Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed and enthusiastic Research Midwife to join our Reproductive Health and Neonatal Clinical Research Delivery Team at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will play a vital role in the delivery of high-quality research across the gynaecology, obstetric, neonatal & fertility specialities. This includes supporting NIHR portfolio and commercial clinical trials as well as observational studies in outpatient, inpatient, and maternity settings.
This is a well-supported role within a friendly, high-performing research team embedded in a Trust recognised for research excellence and innovation.

Main duties of the job
- Build positive relationships with all clinical teams to integrate research into routine care
- Coordinate day-to-day delivery of research studies
- Support participant recruitment and informed consent
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation and data entry
- Be ready to use data entry systems such as redcap & iMedidata – training provided.
- Undertake all relevant research and study specific training.
- Ensure compliance throughout, with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and research governance
- Support each-other as a team, maintaining positive team culture.
- Communicate well, be organized, proactive and ready to learn.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Our team are proactive, collaborative and enthusiastic in delivering research. Boots on the ground, you will be approaching patients and working in and out of antenatal clinic and delivery suite. This is a significant and important part of the role and means being physically ready to be on your feet like any clinical post. We welcome creative thinking and team work when it comes to overcoming hurdles to research delivery.
Investing in a strong preceptorship as a start to the job is important so previous experience in daily research delivery is non-essential.
The post holder will be required to meet all of the essential criteria within the job description and person specifications. The post is 18.75h per week – flexible / compressed hours would be considered if they can be demonstrated to meet the needs of the service.

- To participate in the creation and maintenance of a high-quality clinical research environment.
- To initiate and manage nursing activities related to academic studies and clinical trials, from initiation to termination, according to ICH good clinical practice guidelines.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- Academic attainment at diploma level and prepared to undertake degree level study
- Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for mentorship
Desirable criteria
- Academic attainment at degree/masters’ level
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration experience in clinical specialty area and/or clinical research delivery
- An understanding of research governance and the research process
Desirable criteria
- Experience related to information retrieval and research application
- Experience of supporting clinical research delivery
- Experience of working within specialty
- Evidence of current role expansion that can be applied to the role
- Experience of mentoring junior staff
- Experience of project management
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent IT knowledge/skills
- Advanced clinical skills (i.e., venepuncture, cannulation, ECG) An understanding of the application of research in the clinical governance agenda
- High level of organisation and time management skills
- Ability to work on own initiative
