Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Nursing and HHR Workforce Initiatives, the Extern Coordinator supports the planning, onboarding, orientation, education, and integration of Externs and Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) completing their Supervised PracticeExperience Partnership (SPEP) within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital.
Responsibilities
- Supports the training, integration and development of Externs and IENs at the organizational and unit level
- Contributes to Extern and IEN onboarding, ongoing education and practice development within the boundaries of the Extern and IEN role
- Creates, adapts and delivers orientation and learning resources, using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines
- Aids in the development, implementation, education and evaluation of the Extern and IEN role, in collaboration with the extern leadership team
- Assists Externs and IENs to become familiar with the work in their assigned area of practice
- Collaborates with unit teams to support Externs and IENs in providing required patient care
- Provides an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing education and development of the Externs and IEN learners
- Supports preceptors and primary nurses to promote Extern and IEN success and satisfaction
- Serves as a liaison between the unit leadership, program leadership, Professional Practice and Operations
- Supports the evaluation of the Extern and IEN-SPEP programs with Professional Practice, nursing practice Clinical Resource Leader(s), and unit leadership
Education
- Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Master’s degree in nursing or education (or currently in process) is an asset
- Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
Qualifications
- Patient-centred approach to clinical practice
- Demonstrates excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
- Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship and adult learning
- Previous teaching experience (preceptor, clinical instructor, Faculty Advisor, and/or Course instructor) with learners preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and evidenced-based practice and practice excellence
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in acute care in medicine, surgery, complex continuing care, mental health, maternal newborn and child, and/or emergency areas, preferred
- Good work and attendance record is required
