About the Role:
Oregon Birth and Wellness Center is a freestanding birth center providing family-centered, out-of-hospital birth services. We are hiring an experienced Labor & Delivery RN to work as a Midwife Assistant in our busy, supportive birth center. This position involves direct care in daily clinic hours, labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care in collaboration with midwives.
This is an excellent opportunity for an RN passionate about physiologic birth, midwifery care, building relationships, and perinatal nursing in a non-hospital setting.
Responsibilities:
- Support clients during prenatal visits, labor and birth, and the postpartum period
- Monitor maternal vital signs and fetal heart tones
- Assist midwives with labor support, deliveries, and birth-related procedures
- Administer medications, blood draws, and assist with IV therapy if needed
- Perform newborn assessments and assist with newborn care
- Document care accurately in electronic health records (EHR)
- Maintain clean, safe, stocked birth environment
- Provide breastfeeding support and newborn education
- Respond to obstetric emergencies under midwife direction
Qualifications:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oregon
- BLS and NRP certification (required)
- Labor & Delivery nursing or mother-baby experience strongly preferred, but not required.
- Previous birth center or home birth experience a plus
- Flexible availability: must be able to work weekends, nights, and on-call shifts
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and clinical skills
- Passion for out-of-hospital birth and family-centered care
Schedule:
- 3 days of clinic per week for a total for 24 hours per week. Hours are 8:30am-5:30pm. We are open M-F. Schedule depends on clinic needs.
- Nights and Weekend and on-call rotations. On-call shifts 12 to 24 hours, 6-8 call shifts per month standard.
- Flexible per diem or part-time options available for lactation and postpartum RN
