Position Summary
The Ambulatory Care department provides outpatient services to patients across multiple specialties, including but not limited to urology, orthopedics, general surgery, gynecology, ENT, and plastic surgery.
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) plays an essential role in supporting physicians and/or surgeons in clinic settings, delivering direct nursing care to patients, and contributing to the safe, effective, and efficient functioning of the clinics. The RPN may be required to float to other clinics depending on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
Provide patient care within the scope of practice defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), hospital policies, and unit standards.
Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care.
Assist physicians and/or surgeons during procedures in ambulatory care clinics.
Support patients undergoing minor surgical procedures, orthopedic procedures (including casting), and urology procedures.
Ensure sterile techniques and infection prevention protocols are followed at all times.
Accurately document nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
Provide culturally sensitive, ethical, and people-centered care.
Foster an environment of team respect, collaboration, and mutual support.
Support onboarding of new staff and coach peers according to current best practices.
Actively engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives and professional development.
Maintain awareness and compliance with all hospital policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
Graduate from a two-year Community College Practical Nursing Program.
Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Minimum 5 years of relevant clinical experience.
Demonstrated competency in sterile technique, minor procedures, orthopedic care, and wound management.
Casting course certificate or completion within one year.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a collaborative, respectful team.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads.
Competent computer skills and ability to navigate electronic documentation systems.
Excellent attendance record.
Assets
Previous Operating Room or outpatient clinic experience preferred.
Diploma in Orthopedic Technology from an accredited program.
Member in good standing with the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists.
Completion of a recognized Perioperative Nursing course.
French is considered an asset.
