Position Description
The Director of Health and Well-Being provides strategic leadership and oversight for the development, integration, and sustainability of health and well-being programs across the organization. This role is responsible for overseeing the delivery of new, integrated services that support women and gender-diverse people to grow their physical, emotional, social and economic potential. This role develops strong partnerships to increase opportunities for women and girls to experience better health and wellbeing at every stage of their lives and contribute to system changes to create conditions to thrive.
The Director oversees health and well-being services including two seniors’ centers, youth programs, mental health initiatives, emergency reproductive care program, and health equity efforts, with a focus on women and gender-diverse people. This role will ensure these programs align with the organization's mission, values, and strategic goals while fostering a culture of equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care. This is a new, highly collaborative role with the opportunity to design new programming, and strengthen partnerships and relationships internally, and externally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides oversight, strategic direction and leadership in development of short- and long-term Health and Well-Being program plans in accordance with the YWCA Hamilton’s overall goals, reflecting the needs of the community and ensuring high-quality, equity-focused, trauma informed and client-centered programs;
- Collaborates with academic and research institutions to conduct research, support evaluation, inform policy, and provide reports to the Executive team;
- Identifies the needs of communities through community engagement and develops programs that respond to those needs through changes to existing programs, the development and expansion of new programs;
- Prepares reports for the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Program Development as required on the activities and outcomes of all programs;
- Represent the organization at community tables, committees, conferences, and advocacy events to promote system change to increase opportunities for women, girls and gender diverse people to experience better health and wellbeing at every stage of their lives through creating conditions to thrive;
- Maintains outstanding public relations skills and a professional image in the community;
- Identify and secure funding through grants, government sources, and partnerships.
- Develops, manages and monitors the department budget; meets financial goals; resolving issues by monitoring, and taking corrective action;
- Ensures the development of all policies and procedures related to the effective and efficient delivery of departmental programs;
- Maintains high level of confidentiality when working with client information and employee information;
- Directly manages and coaches up to 5 employees; indirectly manages 25 or more employees including recruiting, training and evaluating performance;
- Demonstrates and model’s strong leadership behaviours as a member of the YWCA Leadership team;
- Nurtures and forms meaningful internal and external working relationships and partnerships (i.e. funders, social services, healthcare providers and community partners) to expand access and support service delivery;
- Foster cross-departmental collaboration to promote integrated, wraparound supports and holistic care;
- Fosters a safe and healthy work environment; ensures employees comply with health & safety standards that meet or exceed legislated requirements;
- Stays current on emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;
- Supports YWCA Hamilton’s mission, vision and values;
- Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works a standard 37.50-hour work week and willingness to work occasional weekend
Qualifications
- Completion of 4-year degree in Public Health, Social Work, health-related field or equivalent academic and/or work experience;
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in health and social services, with expertise in program development, integration, and sustainability;
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing staff;
- Strong background in social services, experience with senior services, youth services, reproductive care, and/or mental health services an asset;
- Knowledge of Hamilton community grassroots, health and social services an asset;
- Deep understanding of social determinants of health, health equity, and trauma-informed care;
- Strong program evaluation and continuous quality improvement experience in community settings;
- Experience managing budgets, working with funders, and writing grants required;
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills with ability to present and influence at all levels of staff and management;
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills;
- Must be able to lead with a feminist, anti-racist / anti-oppressive perspective for day to day work and strategic planning;
- Must have current Emergency First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
- Must provide a current Criminal record Judicial Matters or willingness to obtain at own cost;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and also effectively lead teams and work in a team;
- Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
