Job Summary
The Amplify Project focuses on addressing significant gaps in culturally safe and equitable sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) for Indigenous women, Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer, and gender-diverse (IW2SIQGD) peoples. This community-based participatory research initiative uses qualitative, quantitative, Indigenous, and arts-based methods to amplify IW2SIQGD voices, aiming to inform equitable and culturally-safe SRH care and justice. Guided by Indigenous methodologies and an Indigenous Gender-Based Analysis+ (IGBA+) framework, the project seeks to develop evidence-based, community-driven practice guidelines to elevate IW2SIQGD experiences and priorities.
The Indigenous Health Equity Lab, housed at the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI), is hiring a Research Assistant to support the Amplify Project. The Lab focuses on advancing culturally safe and equitable health services, amplifying Indigenous voices, and fostering Indigenous capacity building and mentorship.
The Research Assistant will be based at the Indigenous Health Equity Lab at WHRI and must be able to work collaboratively with a diverse, multidisciplinary team. Flexibility in hours and occasional travel to community sites are required.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report to the Project Coordinator and Principal Investigator, Dr. Brittany Bingham, and will work closely with academic and community researchers, peer researchers, trainees, and diverse community stakeholders. The position is based at the Indigenous Health Equity Lab at WHRI, located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations. Occasional travel to communities may be required (as public health guidelines allow).
Work Performed
The Research Assistant will provide critical support in the implementation and administration of the Amplify Project, including:
Research Implementation:
- Assisting with participant recruitment, informed consent processes, and data collection for both survey and qualitative research phases, including talking circles and interviews.
- Supporting the preparation and facilitation of research-related activities, including community-based knowledge translation.
- Supporting sharing circles and transcribing data
- Manuscript writing
Community Engagement:
- Engaging with community partners and advisory groups to ensure culturally safe and ethical research practices.
- Maintaining positive and respectful relationships with IW2SIQGD participants and stakeholders.
Data Management:
- Supporting research activities and secure data management, including transcription, coding, and preliminary analysis, following research protocols and ethical guidelines.
Capacity Building:
- Participating in training and mentorship activities to build skills in Indigenous research methods, gender-based analysis, and SRH equity.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Providing general research and project support to ensure the successful completion of project goals.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position works with a high degree of independence and responsibility and exercises a considerable amount of judgement. Errors in judgment could result in serious financial or reputational consequences for the Lab, undermining the Labs ability to meet commitments and achieve its strategic objectives, including the inability to successfully meet granting agencies' deliverables. Inaccurate projections and forecasts could cause the Lab to make costly decisions regarding levels of investigator and staff resources and other support. Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of the Indigenous Health Equity Lab/ WHRI / UBC and may impact levels of research funding made available through partnerships. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility and integrity of the Lab, WHRI, and UBC.
Supervision Received
Reports directly to the project lead, Dr. Brittany Bingham and Project Coordinator. Works under general direction within established policies, procedures, and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards.
Supervision Given
Provides supervision and training to research staff (e.g., Interviewers, Research Assistants).
