Position Summary
The Nurse Extern is accountable for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to patients within an assigned nursing department, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Can only be delegated those tasks for which they have had successful clinical training through their school of nursing and for which they have received validation.
Required
Nurse Extern spots are reserved for nursing students intending to work for SCH upon graduation. The below is also required prior to hire and may be submitted prior to start date:
- Letter of Rec from instructor of choice
- Unofficial Transcript
- Current Class Schedule (and updated schedule and proof passing grades each semester for length of extern program)
- Copy of any nursing skills completed during school
- Signed 2 year RN/LPN commitment to SCH. Includes:
- RN Extern Sign-On Bonus: $1,000 now, $2,500 when graduate, $1,500 after a year as an RN.
- LPN Extern Sign-On Bonus: $500 now, $500 when graduate; still eligible for RN sign-on bonus if become RN at later date and it's still offered.
- Reimbursement for NCLEX, Background Check, KBN Application & JP Exam with copies of receipts
Duties/Responsibilities
- The Nurse Extern can only be delegated tasks for which they have had successful clinical training through their school of nursing and for which they have received validation.
- Assists with non-nursing tasks such as but not limited to crash cart checks, quality control checks, retrieving equipment/supplies, keeping the department clean and stocking of supplies.
- Assists with routine patient care and treatment of patients as delegated by the RN/LPN or designee and under the direct supervision of the RN/LPN including, but not limited to vital signs, Intake Output, pain level assessment, administering enemas, applying hot/cold packs, glucoscans, height and weight, transporting, ambulating, answering call lights, cleaning equipment, sitting 1:1’s, receiving patients in room, assisting in pre/post-operative care, assisting in admission/discharge activities and assisting in treatments.
- Recognizes and practices within scope of certification and competency levels and relays any questions, concerns or situations requiring follow-up or attention to the supervising RN/LPN and seeks assistance when necessary.
- Effectively communicates pertinent information in shift-to-shift and transfer reports and documents items in EPIC as indicated.
- Provides patients' personal hygiene by giving bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves; assisting with travel to the bathroom; helping with showers and baths.
- Provides for activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patients as necessary; ambulating, turning, and positioning patients; providing fresh water and nourishment between meals.
- Provides adjunct care by administering enemas, douches, nonsterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths; applying restraints.
- Maintains patient stability by checking vital signs and weight; testing urine; recording intake and output information.
- Provides patient comfort by utilizing resources and materials; transporting patients; answering patients' call lights and requests; reporting observations of the patient to nursing supervisor.
- Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.
- Maintains work operations by following policies and procedures.
- Protects organization's value by keeping patient information confidential.
- Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and JACHO standards.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations; maintaining licensure.
- Enhances nursing department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Performs all unit routines and requirements as assigned.
- Performs all duties and procedures as defined and authorized by KBN under the direction of a RN/LPN.
- Complies with all safety regulations and use of equipment for patient care.
- Demonstrates competent use of informatics and technology utilized in performance of assigned duties.
- Completes the nursing assessment form with oversight and approval of RN.
- Provides personal care, position changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients and passes ice water. Answers call light.
- Accountable for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to groups of patients within an assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance and direction of a RN. In addition, the Nurse Extern can gain additional clinical practice to enhance their preparation as future licensed nurses.
- The following duties can never be delegated to a Nurse Extern: medication administration, any independent assumption of the role, function, or responsibility of a nurse and receipt or transcription of verbal orders.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent Enrollment in Board of Nursing approved school of nursing
Experience
Completion of nursing fundamentals and/or basic Medical/Surgical clinical rotation
