The Genetics Technician is responsible for the performance of patient clinical testing to include specimen processing, and test performance. This includes pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical duties.
- Follow all established protocols and procedures for testing platforms including but not limited to direct probe technology, nucleic acid amplification, manual and automated PCR techniques, and next generation sequencing.
- Receive and assess genetic specimens to determine acceptability.
- Recognize when information presented on requisitions is unclear and ambiguous and follow corrective actions to be taken.
- Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment according to established protocols.
- Perform all maintenance and quality control according to established protocols.
- Keep supplies fully stocked for department and assist with supply inventory.
- Understand and follow all company policy and procedures including those relating to safety and quality assurance.
- Take an active role within the department through the attendance and participation in laboratory meetings, huddles, and/or brainstorming sessions.
- Assist Department Supervisor, Medical Director and Laboratory Director as needed.
- Demonstrates and embodies the Women’s Care mission and core values.
- Compliance with all HIPAA rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in biology, chemistry, or related scientific discipline required. Bachelor’s degree in science preferred.
- ASCP certification preferred.
- Experience in genetics and next generation sequencing techniques preferred.
- Ability to use a computer and enter data efficiently, including Microsoft office programs.
- Proficient in data entry and record keeping.
- Great attention to detail and focus on patient safety.
- Ability to multi-task, be self-motivated, reliable, accountable, and conscientious.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Recognize personal limitations and seek guidance from supervisors or managers when needed.
- Must be dependable, reliable, and punctual.
