Your Role
The Associate Medical Director, Fertility, US Medical Affairs has responsibility for serving as the internal medical expert in this area, as well as cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships through clinically/scientifically focused interactions with key opinion leaders (KOL) and community healthcare providers (HCPs) in the US Fertility HCP community. These relationships will build awareness of infertility disease state and treatment options, as well as our company’s scientific leadership in the field. A critical role for the Associate Director is to demonstrate an advanced knowledge and comprehension of infertility as a disease, company and competitor product(s) and KOL/institution dynamics.
Reporting to the Head of North America Medical Affairs, Fertility and Endocrinology/HIV, the Associate Director commands a comprehensive understanding of Reproductive Medicine, infertility disease state and the fertility therapeutic landscape. The Associate Director will assist in the development of strategic medical plans, including goals, strategies, and tactics for Fertility. These will be informed by insights gathered from HCP interactions. This role will develop and execute on the medical tactics specified in the plan—delivering on time, on target, and on budget. This role will also contribute to strategic planning and provide scientific and medical oversight in support of commercial colleagues working in Fertility. You will be proactive and demonstrate strong cross-functional leadership. You may be asked to perform some home office duties (remotely) such as review of materials intended for promotional use.
The US Medical Affairs group is responsible for Phase IV, Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISSs), Collaborative Research Studies, and real-world data generation studies. The Associate Director, Fertility, may be asked to contribute medical expertise during the development and execution of these studies.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Functions as an expert resource in the Fertility therapeutic area with the required depth of scientific knowledge to develop long-term relationship experience with KOLs.
- Cultivates and maintains KOLs as peers and advocates whose opinions, disease and disease treatment insights and competitive knowledge provide direction to US Medical Affairs and EMD Serono, Inc.
- Provides in-depth scientific, clinical, and educational support to the KOL community through the dissemination of pertinent educational, scientific, and clinical information on the specific disease state and its treatment.
- Develops scientific material and disseminates to HCPs state-of-the-art research and medical concepts related to Medically Assisted Reproduction, therapeutics, the treatment and management of infertility, and fertility preservation through one-to-one peer interactions and group learning activities (in person, via webinars or podcasts).
- Leads, develops and implements local, regional and national programs to promote disease state and product awareness and education.
- Leads Medical Affairs activities coordinating with internal departments and external customers.
- Represents EMD Serono, Inc. at continuing educational events, programs, medical meetings and conferences, and supports patient advocacy activities.
- Communicates research and development concepts, key field insights and competitive intelligence to appropriate internal stakeholders.
- As needed, coordinates with Clinical Development and Medical Affairs in providing field support for clinical and research studies
- As needed, supports internal study protocol development, submission and approval as part of Collaborative Research Studies and Sponsored Studies, and serves as the proponent for Investigator Sponsored Studies.
- Maintains KOL profiling and visitation records
- Ensures compliant use of field material and conduct of activities and acts as a respected and highly regarded representative of EMD Serono, Inc.
- Maintains a deep understanding of disease states and therapeutic landscape.
- Assists in the development of US strategic medical plans based on insights from healthcare professional interactions.
- Executes medical tactics outlined in the strategic plan within designated timelines and budgets.
- Stays updated on clinical and drug development information through literature reviews, attending scientific meetings, and exchanging knowledge with consultants and investigators.
- Collaborates with sponsors and internal departments on the design and review of study-related documents and professional manuscripts.
- Contributes to peer review processes and generating scientific materials such as abstracts, articles, and presentations.
- As needed, assists in the identification of needs assessments and reviewing medical education grants and charitable contributions submissions.
- As needed, provides medical representation on internal US MLR (Medical, Legal, and Regulatory) review committees.
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced scientific degree (e.g., MS, PharmD, PhD, DO, MD) required.
- Clinical experience (e.g., nursing, embryology, clinician) strongly preferred
- 1 or more years in pharmaceutical industry Medical Affairs strongly preferred

- Expert verbal presenter with experience in scientific/clinical presentations

- High level of collaboration and influencing skills
- Ability to travel up to 70% within the US, occasional travel to international Fertility meetings
- Home location on the West Coast preferred
