Job Summary
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, Maternal Newborn Unit, the Clinical Scholar will be responsible for supporting nurses to develop skills specific to the Birthing Suite Operating Room (OR) in order to facilitate the delivery of high quality care. Modeling quality patient care and professionalism, this experienced clinician will assist nurses to develop the knowledge and skills required for practice within the Birthing Suite OR environment. The Clinical Scholar will provide ongoing coaching and support to enhance the learning experience for skills required in this unique environment. The Clinical Scholar will provide practice support to staff and facilitate safe, patient-centered care in alignment with the ORNAC Standards and Lakeridge Health standards of practice.
They may have other duties assigned to them by their Manager to assist with the clinical education of staff and functioning of the unit.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Facilitates perioperative skill development of front line team members to function in the circulating and/or scrubbing roles within the OR environment during caesarian sections;
- Provides expert clinical consultation for delivery of patient care;
- Provides in the moment coaching, mentoring and demonstration for skills;
- Collaborates with the Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) and Patient Care Manager (PCM) to ensure new hires complete orientation and training within the Birthing Suite OR;
- Floats to main OR with Birthing Suite staff where necessary, to meet education needs;
- Assist staff with critical thinking, skill completion and in the moment clinical situations;
- Provides education for skills beyond the principle expectations of practice and delegated controlled acts;
- Uses a variety of adult learning strategies and evaluation techniques that are well aligned to the intended learning outcomes;
- Utilizes best available evidence to provide in the moment practice support;
- Supports staff participation in personal and professional career development;
- Completes practice audits and communicates outcomes to CPL and PCM;
- Communicates and provides education related to practice changes to staff;
- Reviews and assesses practice changes related to new products or equipment back orders;
- Ensures ORNAC Standards are followed
Qualifications
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
- Completion of Operating Room Perioperative Nursing Course;
- BScN preferred;
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S);
- 5 years recent, proven experience in OR setting required;
- Knowledge of Lakeridge Health policies and practices;
- Proficient in documentation within the EPIC system;
- Theoretical and practical experience in adult education an asset;
- Previous experience with orientating or preceptorship of new staff or students preferred;
- Proven effective interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills;
- Proven compliance with best practice and quality standards;
- Demonstrated effective critical thinking, prioritization, and conflict resolution skills;
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public;

- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety program and practices including staff, patient, and environmental safety and participation in regular in-service education in perioperative area
Conditions Of Employment
The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).
