Duties
Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) works as an independent nurse practitioner in their specialty, and will perform the following duties:
- Order, perform or interpret the results of diagnostic tests.
- Analyze and interpret patient's histories, symptoms, physical findings or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
- Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care and professional practice guidelines.
- Make decisions concerning medical care needs of patients, which may involve various treatment modalities, prescribed medications, consults and referrals.
- Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections and injuries. Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage and frequencies.
- Counsel patients about drug regimen and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications and herbal remedies.
- Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
- Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patient's individual circumstances.
All sites hire Nurse Practitioners for outpatient clinic positions, as primary care providers (preferred candidate is FNP). Some sites may have more specialized positions, including ED APNs (with documented ED experience), PMHNPs, Women's Health, PNPs, and Wound Care.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Basic Requirement(s)
Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.
- Areas of specialties for positions at these locations may include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Adult/Geriatric, Emergency, Family, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Women's Health, or other specialties identified for the position.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.
Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. GS-13 Basic Requirements: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of Professional Nursing experience
in the clinical specialty of the position that is equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) either in the private sector or federal experience:
- Independent practice as a nurse practitioner, including duties such as, but not limited to: analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses, prescribing medications, managing acute and chronic care conditions, and developing treatment plans.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
