Who we are
At the divisional level, we regulate the export of animal products and import of food products through the delivery of inspection and certification services including those related to live animal operations for both import and export.
At the branch level we undertake regulatory functions by providing inspection and certification for the export of meat, meat products and the import and export of live animals and reproductive material to meet importing country requirements and Australian legislative requirements.
At the section level we provide veterinary and technical assessments, inspections and certification for the import and export of live animals and animal genetic material. We work under the Export Control Act 2020 and Biosecurity Act 2015 to ensure compliance with Australian and international requirements for the import and export of live animals and genetic materials.
The Job
As a Biosecurity Officer in the Live Animal Section your primary duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Support Live Animal Operations: Assist in technical assessments, inspections, and certification for live animals and animal genetic material.
• Manage Communication and Records: Handle team email inboxes, maintain records, and ensure documentation for imports and exports is accurate and up to date.
• Respond to Stakeholders: Resolve inquiries, provide advice, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Review and Process Documentation: Assess import/export documents, update records, and upload critical details such as packing lists and flight information.
• Schedule Inspections: Organize bookings for live animal and reproductive material inspections, ensuring efficient scheduling.
• Prepare Invoices and Fees: Manage cost recovery tasks, including generating invoices and applying fees using departmental systems.
• Issue Certificates and Permits: Assist in preparing required.
What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
• Experience working in an operational regulatory environment.
• Experience working within a regulatory framework.
• Knowledge, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge, of the department’s activities and the role of an authorised officer and Biosecurity Officer in the Live Animals Section.
• Knowledge, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge, of departmental processes and systems.
The successful applicant must:
• Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
• Note that the physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work.
• Note that you may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work.
• Wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
